Unfortunately when you get your hair colored it makes you hair more porous and the color more vulnerable to damage from UV rays, heated hair tools and harsh minerals in water - this leads to brassiness and fading. To prevent this make sure to use products that restore the cuticle and protect the hair. Do not use a color-depositing shampoo and conditioner if your hair is fading or turning brassy because these types of shampoos and conditioners contain semi-permanent dyes that can change and flatten your color. Instead, use an at-home glaze. Here are the 6 simple steps to keep you hair color looking fresh! * Use a mild shampoo for color treated hair. To reduce fading, wash your hair every other day and avoid standing right under the shower unless your rinsing your hair. Try any of the Redken products. * Use a rich conditioner from the ear level and down. Leave it in for three minutes before rinsing. During the summer and spring use one that contains UV filters. Try any of the Redken products. * Once a week use a deep conditioner, applying it from just below the roots down to the ends if your hair is thick. Apply the deep conditioner from ear level down to the ends if your hair is fine. Leave in for 10 minutes while you are in the shower, to increase the effectiveness of the deep conditioner put on a shower cap after applying the treatment. Try Wella Color Preserve Deep Treatment. * Spritz a thermal protector, like TRESemme Heat Tamer, all over your hair before using a blow dryer, iron or hot rollers. * If you are going out in the sun, make sure to coat your hair with a UV-protecting spray or cream. Concentrate it on the outer part of your hair where the sun penetrates most. * To brighten faded hair use an at-home glaze tinted in your shade such as John Frieda Luminous Color Glazes. If your color is still fresh and you just want more shine, try a clear glaze. Tips and tricks: * Red and auburn shades fade the fastest so make sure to apply a colored glaze at least once a week * To prevent brassiness in blonde hair use a purple-tone shampoo once a week, try Alterna Caviar Blonde Shampoo. * If your hair is still too dark a day or two after coloring, coat your hair in coconut oil from a health food store. Blow dry your hair for 10 minutes then wash the coconut oil out with a clarifying shampoo (this might take more than just one lather). Try Matrix Essentials Alternate Action Clarifying Shampoo. * If you have fine hair, UV sprays can way down your hair. So I suggest combining a few spritzes of sun-shielding spray and a lightweight wave enhancing spray in your hands. Put the concoction in your hair from roots to ends, make sure your hair is damp when you do this. Repeat this process until your hair is coated. * If your hair turns orange or brassy use L’Oreal Paris Tone Refiner to reduce the brassiness. The results will last for two to four weeks and available for shades of blonde or brunette. * If your hair feels like straw after spending a few days at the beach or pool use a gentle shampoo and an after sun hair mask to help restore the shine and softness. Try Phyto Plage Moisturizing After-Sun Repair Mask or Rene Furterer Repairing After-Sun Mask. * Use a wide-tooth comb to distribute sprays and conditioners through wet hair. The wide-tooth combs are much better for your hair because they prevent snagging. * If you are blonde use a clarifiying shampoo such as Redken Cleansing Cream Shampoo at least once a week to remove chlorine and hard-water minerals that can cause dullness or a slightly green tint. If you are a brunette or a red head, you should avoid these types of shampoo’s because they contain sulfates that can strip your color. An everyday shampoo for brunettes and redheads is good enough to remove that mineral build up.
