Know who you’re traveling with. This is the best method of prevention. Know how you like to travel and travel with people who travel like you. Do you want to be out and on your feet all day? Do you eat on the cheap? Do you party all night or go to sleep early? Can you go a few days without showering? Ask questions like this to yourself and to other to see if you will be compatible. Personally, I hate when people whine, especially when we’re traveling together. So if I see a hint of a whiner before we leave, I’ll not even consider traveling with them. Remember, you will be with these people 23 hours a day for the extent of your trip, so choose wisely. Staying in communication with the others is essential. If someone is not “working” out it shows. Usually it’s just 1 person that is upset and bringing everyone else down. Find out why. Are they just hungry? Have they been wanting to do something no one else wants to do? Many times it’s hard for people to speak up about things like this, especially in a group, and they just release their anger in other ways as you travel. You don’t want a resentful travel buddy. Talk with them. Ask them if they want to go off on their own for a while and see what they want. When traveling together, spend some time apart. Traveling alone is an amazing joy. Splitting up, even if it’s for just a few hours every few days, will make all the difference in the world. You’ll all come back refreshed and sharing your experience and feel the collective energy of the group return to a healthy level. Mini vacations from each other is the number one way to avoid mutiny on the trip. If you feel like the group is naturally divided, with one group of people complaining about what the other group wants to do, then split these groups! It’s easier and it assures everyone will have a good time. If this happens consistently, keep doing your own thing, remember it’s your vacation you’ve saved up for and been looking forward too for months, don’t let someone else spoil it. Most problems when traveling with a group arise when it’s time to eat. Some people can get real cranky when not fed and will let this show. Everyone wants to eat something different, at different times and with different budgets. Many times you will never find a place that truly pleases everyone. One solution is to obviously break up and eat separately. If this isn’t feasible, try the grocery. Going to a grocery or local market not only saves you money, but everyone can find something they’ll eat and have no reason to complain about it. While you’re at the grocery, grab some fruit or chips for later incase you get hungry and no one else is ready to eat. When trying to find food with a group of people, start looking at least 30 minutes before you want to sit down. Don’t wait until everyone is starving or everyone will get cranky and hungry, and you’ll end up settling for food no one really wants.
