Their use has been increasing over the past 10 years. The mantra of green cleaning advocates: Toxic residues from cleaning products do not easily degrade in the environment. "It's important for consumers to understand that these [toxic] products don't disappear once they go into a landfill or down the drain. They persist for years and years in the environment," said Jeanne Rizzo, a registered nurse who heads the Breast Cancer Fund, a national organization that supports research into environmental links to breast cancer. TerraChoice, which conducts market research purchases of nontoxic products, estimates annual U.S. sales at $500 million a year, and that the market for such products has been increasing by 18 percent to 25 percent a year. Scot Case, vice president of TerraChoice, based in Ontario, Canada, said many state and local governments are requiring safer cleaning products in offices. "The state of New York is one of them," Case said of an emphasis in Albany to use cleaners that meet EcoLogo and Green Seal safety standards. "But that's just one example. Many school systems across the United States are also requiring safer cleaning products." Tim Sanchez, spokesman for a nonprofit organization called The New American Dream, in Takoma Park, Md., said his center encourages individuals, school systems and corporations to use gentler cleaning substances. The center promotes nontoxic products by listing cleaning agents on its Web site. Sanchez said his center urges consumers to use "green friendly detergents and laundry products that do not have harsh chemicals that produce runoff and pollute fish." Heather Davies, an environmental policy specialist at the U.S. Department of the Interior, said the federal government also is supporting the concept of greener cleaning. The department's main building in Washington, D.C., has been cleaned with non-toxic products since 1999. The practice, Davies said, now includes the department's other buildings.
