See more » This Vintage Filigree Diamond Engagement Ring is crafted in lavish platinum, weighs 2.9g and measures 11mm wide and 6mm deep. Resplendent in 1.71cts of variously cut Diamonds, this elaborately designed and masterfully crafted Filigree Ring depicts a gracefully domed filigree plaque exposing an attention-seeking alignment of three diamonds. This intriguing trio comprises a 0.70ct cushion-cut diamond graded 'very light yellow'(O) color and SI1 clarity, flanked by pear-shaped diamonds weighing 0.41cts and 0.50cts respectively, graded M color and I1 clarity, surmounting an exquisite filigree gallery. The latter incorporates fascinating assemblage of florally themed silhouettes, adorned with two fiery old mine-cut diamonds, cumulatively weighing 0.10cts, graded L color and SI clarity range. Highly ornate, 'bombé' designed filigree shoulders taper gracefully to form a spherical band and the easily sizable shank of this Vintage Engagement Ring. The term 'filigree' denotes a decorative openwork piercing technique in which patterns are made of wires, often soldered to a background in a precise, time-consuming, and costly process. Filigree work was familiar to Europe for centuries and reached its highest popularity in the 1830's. London and Paris jewelers possibly acquired their inspirations from Portugal or North Africa where filigree had been a common goldsmith technique along the Mediterranean coast. European and American manufacturers started mass production of filigree in the 1930's by cutting patterns out of stamped metal sheets. The piercing, however, had to be done by hand and was therefore labor intensive and expensive.
