Wind Jamming Maui is everyone's go-to surfing destination, so it should be no surprise that those killer waves—plus the island's steady winds—make for some primo kitesurfing. One of the hottest new sports in America, kitesurfing looks like tons of fun, and it is, but it's not something you can try out on a whim. To do it, you strap your feet onto a board, don a harness attached to a kite, and maneuver the lines so the wind pulls you up and across the water. Getting professional guidance first will temper the learning curve and help you avoid a "kitemare" (surfer lingo for a crash). At the north shore's Kanaha Beach, kite surfing pioneer Alan Cadiz of HST will get you up and scudding in no time. After three hours or so spent learning to handle the kite on dry land, you'll be ready to take to the wind, waves, and sky.
