Before a company "goes live" with a product or service, they will often seek the input and feedback of a group of people who represent a cross-section of their target audience. Traditionally, this type of group interview took place in a room somewhere but, with web technology making it possible to gather groups of people "virtually", it's not unusual for focus groups to also meet in an online environment. Focus groups usually pay more than surveys because they require more time and deeper insights.
