Just be sure you have good ventilation to air out the strong fumes. | Full Review | I recently purchased my first house. It was quite the "Fixer-Upper". The house was very dated...wood paneling throughout as well as Formica. One of the first projects we decided to tackle was the wood paneled walls. We had asked around and heard Kilz was good for painting paneling, so we gave it a try. After applying one coat Kilz and 2 coats of paint it was only a matter of time before we began noticing chipping & flaking. The Kilz primer was doing absolutely nothing. After some intense research on the web I heard about a primer called Zinsser BIN. A woman in Indiana had used it to paint her Formica kitchen counter top. Immediately I thought this was a big mistake. Painting a high wear and tear surface??? The way she did it was by using Zinsser BIN followed by 2 coats of paint and a few coats of Zinsser clear coat. The woman swore by the Zinsser name. So I did some research of my own and learned that Zinsser BIN adheres remarkably to all dense, smooth and slick surfaces including dense hardboard, chipboard, glass, Formica, ceramic tile, PVC & metal pipes, radiators, grillwork, fire doors, and galvanized ductwork. No sanding or etching or deglossing agents are needed to get a firm bond. B-I-N provides an "anchor" for the top coat so it can't be chipped or scraped off easily. With nothing to lose I decided to give it a try. I bought a 5-gallon bucket of Zinsser primer at Home Depot for just under $100. Pretty pricey I know. After lightly sanding the paneling I applied one coat of Zinsser BIN. Talk about powerful fumes. I was high as a kite after 30 minutes. A word to the wise, open all of your windows when using this product inside. When the application dried I attempted to scratch off some of the primer. Despite my effort I could not get one speck to flake off. I was very impressed. I proceeded to apply the finish coat and the room looked great. With plenty of primer left over I decided to take on a bit of a challenge. If Zinsser was strong enough to refinish a Formica countertop what about Formica kitchen cabinets? So I gave it a try. First I sanded the cabinets. Not a lot, but just enough to take off the sheen. I cleaned the surfaces with Clorox wipes and let dry. I applied one coat of Zinsser BIN and 2 coats of latex semi gloss paint. It is now one year later and I am proud to say have not had one scratch, nick or flake. The kitchen looks terrific. Thinking I would have to replace all of the cabinets to update the kitchen Zinsser BIN saved my thousands. Since painting the cabinets I have used this product on all kinds of surfaces. Zinsser BIN even works on ceiling water stains. Recently a friend of mine wanted to paint directly over wallpaper but was unsure what type of primer to use. I suggested BIN. He took my advice and was extremely please with the results. This is a terrific product. You will not be disappointed! Recommended: Yes
