RAR's fave confections...Oh yeah...

Sometimes I truly believe that candy is a gift and a blessing to us all. No, really, I do. People who know me are astonished by both the amount of candy I consume and the enthusiasm with which I do it; there is nothing to say other than I am completely and utterly in love with candy, think very highly of it, and spend a decent amount of time shopping for it and eating it. I get as excited about going to the candy store as the next 4 year-old! I have a candy drawer, or cabinet, depending on where I am living and how much space is available. Throughout the entirety of graduate school I ate piles of candy in class in order to get through each one!! Yeah, I have had a lot of cavities, and I should floss more...but no one is perfect. Some people think all candy is the same, that there is no difference between the store-brand gummy bears and the imported German ones; you people are wrong. If you are going to eat crap then eat the right crap. Have some pride! Do as I say (not as I do) and purchase these items during your next "calories don't count I am upset and I love sugar" moment...

Marzipan fruit are another way to eat marzipan, and also great for parties and such. Plus, they are so cute. You can find recipes to make your own, or just buy them at candy stores and the likes. They all taste the same...really really good.

I love marzipan! Have you seen all the crazy things they do with this? It is so fun to eat!

Ok...I am not the biggest chocolatier, but these are one of the most amazing chocolate treats I have ever eaten. First of all they are European and not easily found here; definitely a gourmet store or special-order item. They are these little chocolate eggs with a nutty, hazelnut, nutella-esque creamy filling that melts in your mouth and leaves you wanting a lot more. I ate these throughout Europe, and brought some back, though I wish I had brought back a lot more. If you ever see these anywhere try them; you will not be sorry. If you see them please tell me so I can have some too!

mmmmmmmmm... Kinder chocolate!! It is AMAZING = )

Licorice Bridge Mix Deluxe

Highlights: Jelly Belly Licorice Bridge Mix - 10 lb. Jelly Belly Licorice Bridge Mix Manufactured by Jelly Belly Candy Co. (Goelitz) For the TRUE Licorice lover! Unit Cost: $56.83 Item # 4411

Comments (1)

The licorice bridge mix is seriously good. It has a few different items in it, from licorice pastels to chewy licorice drops to licorice Jelly Bellys; incidentally it is made by Goelitz, the wonderful face behind my gourmet candy corn fixation and Jelly Belly. This is great for the licorice-lover because there are so many tastes and textures to choose from beyond basic black licorice. This is a good thing, you have to mix it up from time to time! In any case I did not want to leave the black licorice-lovers out of my candy tirade, and this stuff is fairly accessible and can be found at the Sweet Factory, specialty stores, and at times even packaged for sale in a grocery store (though this is rare). Also as I have done my candy research for this Kaboodle page, I see how much of this can be ordered in bulk online. This is going to be very dangerous to me in the future...

These Kosher fruit toffee are like Starburst on steroids. They are softer and easier to bite through than a Starburst, and have about ten times the flavor. I eat too many of these at once, so I dont buy them too much, but I will eat any of the flavors because I so love the texture and the taste, and that is saying a lot for me as I tend to be a real flavor-snob. I only like the berries, and forget about the citrus, but in this case they all get a fair go!

Petite fruit sours have been a part of my life for many years. The source of excitement at a candy shop, I used to go in and try to pick the package with as many apple-flavored fruits as possible. Then I would check for strawberry, plum, pear, and on down the line. These are super sweet, so if you are not a sugar freak you will likely only be able to eat a few at a time, but I love them so much. They are sugary but then chewy but then melt in your mouth; they also sell them at Dean and Deluca, our favorite purveyor of gourmet candy and goods.

Comments (1)

Candy buttons are not only good but also a lot of fun. It is entertaining to go through and eat each one off of the sheet of paper, going in order of color or mixing it up. Since these are just little blobs of sugar I love them, and apparently they harken back to simpler times of candy shop wonder experienced by the baby-boom generation; the 'nostalgia' factor. What is also nice about these is that, since you spend a lot of time working at eating them, you dont actually consume too much of the item. Candy that requires work is good for us sugar-hounds who eat too much too quickly and then wish there had been some kind of an obstacle in our way...

Hi-Chew is from Japan. I think the Japanese love candy like I do because they make a lot of great products in this department. Hi-Chew comes in many flavors, such as grape and strawberry and peach (and more) so I say buy them all. The consistency is somewhat akin to a starburst, but these are juicier, fresher, and a bit more chewy; it is hard to describe in full so you will have to go find them. They carry these at Asian groceries and specialty stores.

Since I have spoken of the Haribo Gummy Apples, here is what they look like. I dont know why they are so flavorful and fantastic other than to tell you that they are and you should buy them. Every once in awhile they will come in a package like the gummy bears or the gummy colas (another favorite) do, but usually you have to get these at a specialty store, the kind where you tell them how much you want and they weigh it out for you. In any case I can eat a good pound of these in a day, nothing unheard of for me. I used to live right near a Dean and Deluca where they consistently stocked this very item, so I was a happy camper.

Ok, I know a lot about candy stores as well as candy. I can tell you where important, landmark candy stores are all over the United States as well as in many international locations. My memory is good, but when it comes to candy stores I swear to be able to find any one anywhere that I have ever been to without so much as taking a wrong turn. Sugar heaven in Boston is one of the best places on earth. I went to undergrad in Boston, and Sugar Heaven was not there at the time which still hurts me to this day (especially since I worked at a store about 200 feet away). Anyways this place has every candy you could ever want, even the hard-to-find haribo gummy sour apples and the candy straws filled with white sugary frosting stuff. The store is expensive, I will say. A lovely person I used to spend a lot of time with once took me there and spent 40 bucks on indulging my desire for candy...pretty sweet, huh?! I also love cotton candy (I get it without fail at every ball game/concert/fair etc I attend) and they have a machine with like 9 different flavors to choose from including grape and pina colada...awesome! This place is reason enough to make a trip to Boston.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough (CCCD) Ice Cream - I have spent serious TIME with this substance, hehe. It is hard to find a good CCCD ice cream because there is almost always a poor cookie dough to ice cream ratio, as in too much ice cream and not enough cookie dough. Alas, have no fear because Baskin Robbins has solved this problem. Additionally, the vanilla ice cream is actually good so I dont have to always just pillage it for the dough and throw away the rest (yeah, I do that). I think there is a lot of vanilla in the recipe, which just makes this flavor sooooo good...

Along with all the rest I also harbor a deep love for Marzipan. Not all Marzipans are created equal, either. I have sampled many and this is the winner; it is sweet but not gross, almondy but not too nutty, and the texture is very fine and practically melts in your mouth. It has a good "mouthfeel," as food product marketers might say. I eat this by itself, but many use Marzipan as an ingredient in baking/cooking. Though a bit pricey, this stuff is well worth it.

See's Vanilla Nut Fudge is pretty much an orgasm in a 1x1 inch square (and you can buy bigger pieces, too :-) I love this stuff; I have had to ask people to only purchase a few pieces at a time, instead of a pound box, because I actually cannot will myself not to eat it until I am almost ill. Other See's chocolates are amazing as well; I am not a huge chocolate person but a lot of their's are vanilla or maple-filled, so they satisfy the sugar obsession. Try the butterscotch squares or the bordeaux bars, or the scotchmallows. I mean try it all, you cant go wrong here. I never bought items on the website, since it is located on the West Coast where I live, but now See's candy can be had by East Coasters as well and that is just priceless.

Meringue makes it into my top five favorite foods of all time. I don't know that I could go on without them, and I love baking them because they are super easy, super good, and it is fun to eat the batter. Pretty much all Mss Meringue flavors are good - I also love cappucchino and the Mint Chocolate Chip. MCC are great because of the dual flavor / texture thing I have mentioned; the chocolate chips and the sugary, crunchy cookie simultaneously compliment and contrast one another and that is the best! Meringues are a great dessert with any meal, light or heavy, and unless you are me you wont eat too many at once because they are sweet.

Maple sugar candy is essentially a delicacy. It tastes like the frosting on a maple bar (love that!) but without the doughnut! It is fat free, which is so fantastic, right? You are feeling healthier already, I can tell. This candy is usually carried in gourmet stores; I do not see a lot of it in the grocery store per se. These are like flavored sugar cubes though, so you need to really like sugar to stomach these; putting down the whole package at once is really an acquired skill...

Haribo is another best-in-show candy company. I have to say there is a German candy theme here...the country just has a way with sugar. I enjoy almost all Haribo products; I have also eaten them in Germany and the ones we get here are slightly stale by comparison although since I am so used to it I somewhat prefer it. If you are into gummies at all, this is the brand for you. These particular candies are gummy on the inside and have little sprinkles on the outside to provide that one-two punch of two textures in one bite. As someone who appreciates different tastes and textures (think kettle corn - people like the sweet and salty at the same time because it is more fun and more complex) this is a long-standing favorite item. Plus this brand is carried in many mass-market stores, so it is accessible.

Yes this is one of my all-time favorites. First of all, this company, Goelitz, has become part of Jelly Belly, another top-shelf confectioner. Goelitz is the fine maker of many wonderful candies, including all of the special candy corn items such as bunny corn (I am willing to run people over to get that stuff), reindeer corn, bat corn, and of course traditional candy corn. I dont know if it is the sweet taste or the refined confectioners sugar that so differentiates this stuff from similar-looking products found at the grocery or drug store, but it tastes amazing and I will eat a whole bag without stopping. Kinda sick, but it happens. This is only made during the fall, so after halloween there is no more. I havent found any so far in stores this year (I have looked) but you can order it online!
