The good things you can do with online video go far beyond YouTube, and there are a number of free applications and utilities–many of them open source–that you can turn to to help with web video tasks. In this post, I’ll round up six of my favorites. If you send video of any kind out on a network basis, look into Xvid. This free application compresses video files, which are often huge and unwieldy in size. I’ve gotten better than 100-to-1 compression ratios with Xvid. Blender is not only one of the best graphics programs from the open source world, it’s one of the best open source applications of any kind. If possible, emulate a VT-100 terminal (almost every terminal does). DO NOT connect a keyboard to the Sun machine. The Long Version First, let's examine the serial port of your box. They generally come in 2 types, with one exception. The first is the standard 25pin serial port. This is generally recognized as a female connector of the back of the machine, with 2 rows of pins in a "D" style connector (see figure 1). The second type is a "mini-din" style connector. This is a round, inset female connector with 8pins, and a notch to tell you which side is up when plugging it in (see figure 2). Regular readers of this column might notice that I've spent a lot of time on WSDL. There's a reason for this: after XML and SOAP, I firmly believe that service description is the most important component of designing, building, and deploying heterogeneous web services. There are a couple of reasons why this is true. First, it is a precise description of what the bits on the wire will be. Without that, it is exceedingly difficult for distributed applications to talk to each other. It's still possible, and great things can be made — SAMBA is a tour de force of reverse engineering — but that's not really how you want your customers, partners, or colleagues to be spending their development time. Second, if you have the luxury of time and resources — not to mention the managerial foresight — to be able to first design your network interfaces before developing the code behind them, then the service description will be the first thing you will write. I took an old SPARCstation IPX (almost the right name already!) for which specs can be found at http://www.obsolyte.com/sun_ipx/ if you are interested. The case is very well suited to conversion, as it has a top-mounted bracket which can take a 3.5" hard drive and floppy - the Sun had an auto-eject floppy, so I've installed an LS-120 drive so that I didn't have to cut a hole in the case for the eject button. The LS-120 can be software-ejected, and the emergency-eject hole lines up perfectly with the Sparc case. The top bracket also clamps the micro-ATX power supply, which fits perfectly. In the base, I've mounted the mobo on stand-offs and added a power and reset button to the rear, and 2 blue LEDs to the front for power and hard-drive (the Sun originally had only a single LED). The rear of the case still needs a little tidying, but it's nearly there. To make all of this fit, I had to sand away around 1mm of the internal plastic case moulding under the power supply and remove a couple... See less

Open source software (OSS) has had a profound effect on several software markets, such operating systems (Linux, OpenSolaris and the various BSD Uni), webservers (Apache), databases (MySQL), blogging (WordPress and others) and a number of others. The benefits to users include lower prices for commercial products, higher quality products - both OSS and commercial, and greater choice. All in all, OSS is Very Good Thing for the IT industry. Alas, the OSS storage arena hasn’t been as blessed as, say, webservers, where Apache holds a majority of the server market. There are a couple of nascent storage management initiatives, Aperi and Storage Revolution. The latter is meeting at SNW to write a spec. I wish them luck. The SMI-S spec is big and getting competitors to agree on what and how they will implement it will take some doing, so it will be a moving target for some time.
