What Anthropologie doesn't tell you about all those picturesque photo locals is that there is probably no insulation in that bathroom; or about that a rat turd that fell from the no-sheetrock-having ceiling into the medicine cabinet; or the big-ass beetle that was found floating half dead in the toilet. Someone asked for inside shots of our little cabin so I took a few of the more presentable corners this weekend. Remember, nobody has lived in this house or about eighteen years give or take. It's definitely raw. Now raw might look good in photos, but do you really want to live in it? I do and I don't. I'd like to keep the cute kitchen sink cabinet, but we are going to tear it out. It's built into the location, meaning it's not a self-contained unit. It's dark and scary and it always has a rat infestation. It came stocked with a bottle of malathion. I'm ready to start anew. We'll have a carpenter friend fashion a new one, using the old sink, to fit the tiny space—think boat galley, but... See less

Dear readers, this will be my last post for about a week. Last night my daughter and I returned home to a pool of 6 inches of water which flooded the entire lower floor of our home. Luckily most of our important belongings such as photos, artwork, and even this computer that I'm writing on were upstairs and unharmed. When I look at it rationally I know that we are lucky. There is damage but it can be fixed... my daughter and pets are safe. None the less this is a sad and draining time, and all my energy in the upcoming week or more will be exerted on trying to make my home livable again. Thank you for understanding. Why is it that no matter how old you get you still feel 5 when you fall over? The kind of fall where you're in pain, but the first thought that enters your adult mind as you quickly glance around, whilst still on your front on the ground is "who saw that?". Yep, this morning I walked out of the corner deli with my morning muffin (raspberry and white choc for those detail mongers), and became airborne as I walked back outside. Now I didn't just trip, ooh no, I did a spectacular fly through the air, palms out and landed on my front via my knees, palms and my DD RIGHT BREAST! I actually felt myself BOUNCE on my breast, yes quite an odd sensation for those of you who haven't had the pleasure. The muffin? Tear (don't cut) 1 1/2-inch-wide strips so they have a slightly rough edge (tearing along a straight edge works well). The rough edges help make a smooth overall surface. Drag a strip of newspaper through the papier-mâché paste, wipe off any excess with your fingers, and place it at an angle on the balloon. Place the second strip so that it slightly overlaps the first. Continue until the balloon has been covered with one layer of paper strips--except for a 2-inch square at the top, through which the candy will go. Give the papier-mâché up to 24 hours to dry. Cover your leftover paste with plastic wrap so it doesn't dry out (if it does, add warm water). See less
