UCLA's Center for Civil Society, a research center of the UCLA School of Public Affairs, is once again publishing a report on the nonprofit sector in Los Angeles. The 2006 edition titled, New Horizons, is an update on the scale and scope of nonprofit and philanthropic activities in the Los Angeles region, examining policy issues and providing an overall assessment of current nonprofit developments in the area. Among this year’s findings are: Nonprofits are not spread equally across Los Angeles, and to a large extent, their distribution mirrors rather than deflects the region’s image of economic segregation and disparities. The growth of nonprofit organizations between December 2004 and January 2006 is the lowest it has been since 1995; however, expenditures have increased, particularly in higher education. The vision of Ginga Arts is to increase the self-esteem and improve the well being of at-risk youth by offering its activities in schools, after-school programs and community settings. As the ginga [djing-ah] is the basic capoeira movement upon which other movements are developed, capoeira provides a solid foundation for personal development, self-confidence, leadership and empowerment. Because our programs are fun, as well as vehicles for developing useful physical and social skills, we expect them to be popular and widespread. Over time, as the program grows, Ginga Arts hopes that students here will give back what they have learned through capoeira to the next generation of youth in their communities, just as we hope to bring former at-risk youth, from Brazil, who are now capoeira instructors, to work with Ginga Arts.
