After a few weeks of nonstop house hunting and catching up on long overdue projects, we were super excited to set aside a leisurely weekend last week to run around town taking in all of our friends newer, bigger, better gallery spaces, and ringing in the month long Robert Altman fest at the Portland Art Museum NW Film Center with a screening of one of my favorite movies of all time: Brewster McCloud! I've been toting around a decaying video store copy of this film for decades, eventually upgraded to the laserdisk, but have never, never seen it on the big screen! With an original screenplay written by Doran William Cannon, who was also responsible for another top ten favorite, Otto Preminger's "Skidoo," and starring the always perfect Mister Bud Cort and the magical, elvin and otherworldly Miss Shelley Duvall (Probably my number one vintage muse - as you can probably tell by the girls that I paint! The shape of the rocking chair was partially inspired by a shell. This gives it a beautiful organic design which is raw on the outside but smooth and refined on the inside. A piece of furniture that provides a unique experience of inner tranquillity. The steel frame has been constructed without any transverse lines thus accentuating the floating appearance of the chair. We were blown away by the impact of this flowering quince tree mural when we accidented across it in Robert Lachman's article for the LA Times on the revival of wall murals. We love the way it anchors this room without overwhelming the other elements, an effect accomplished through its well-chosen scale and a paring down to silhouette (Lachman describes the style as mod). It was painted by Jeff Robinson in the living room of interior designer Molly Luetkemeyer's home (the place is now owned by Kate Schintzis.) Lachman quotes Luetkemeyer as saying, "You can add this one, beautiful, dramatic gesture which completely activates the space, and it allows you to keep everything else fairly neutral." Even if you lack Robinson's finesse, you can create some drama of your own with stencils. Check out The Stencil Library and Stencil1 for ideas and inspiration. See less

this past spring it seems i read alot about large scale items coming into the scene at some of the furniture fairs and now i see them trickling into the interior magazines lately and into real life. living etc and instyle both showing these ideas in interior settings this month. my favorite, from cnn anchor campbell brown's manhattan apartment (below) with this white jonathan adler lamp in the corner. i also love the idea of the opposite as living etc shows on this page i scanned in below with this miniature diorama scene. and small stump's horse meadow dome which sold before i could even post it up on phm. In early 2003 I'd just gotten back online in Thailand after spending a month without Internet access in Burma, and I read news of Google's acquisition of Blogger. This'll sound way geeky, but it really felt like one of those, "Where were you when ___ happened?" moments. Overnight it legitimized and validated what a small-but-growing number of people like me were doing back then - publishing and sharing our thoughts and lives on the web. My friend Katie was working on AdWords at the time, and I emailed her right away. "Katie — lemme know when Blogger starts hiring! It doesn't matter what for — I just wanna work on it!" I'd been a Blogger user since 2000, and had just moved to my Aunt's couch in Woodside after my travels wound down (meaning: I'd spent all my cash on the road).... See less
