This is probably one of the most interesting, maybe even bizarre, gifts I've seen in a while...the shitake mushroom log. With proper care, the log can yield mushrooms every 8-12 weeks for years, but if your recipient friend tends to kill any living plant that enters their home, this gift could be a big bust (although it's not a plant, but a fungi, so maybe they would have better luck). I live with a chef so I can sort of see how this would be appealing - though my cat would probably eat anything growing and use the log as a scratching post before we could actually harvest any mushrooms!
