With a hand of 10 cards, players try to score the most points per round by constructing the longest, grammatically correct, and sensible sentence. Each card used in a sentence is worth 5 points, but using some of the more difficult conjugations on the card can earn you bonus points. Any player can object to another players sentence, on either grammatical grounds, or the fact that the sentence just doesn't make sense. The defending player and the objecting player get to argue their points to the rest of the players, who form a jury. The jury gets to vote on whether or not the sentence is acceptable. A dealer arranges 12 cards, face up, and the players--without taking turns--hastily scrutinize the images for logical "sets" of three cards linked by combinations of sameness or difference. It's not as complicated as it sounds: examples include a trio of paired ovals with increasing levels of shading between cards, or disparate symbols in different colors which increase in number on each card (card one has a green squiggle, card two a pair of purple ovals, card three a trio of diamonds). The trick is to keep calm while trying to make the rapid connections. The premise is simple- you're a farmer in the business of growing and selling beans. You start out with only two fields for planting your beans and you can only plant one type of bean per field. I played it with the students as part of an after-school games club at my local elementary school. After about five minutes they had it down cold. The colorful cards are fun to look at and easy to read. The game can be played with up to 5 players as each tries to complete connections of seven cards. We've always liked playing UNO when the kids were younger, but as my kids have gotten older, of course, it's gotten boring. This version of the game appeals to everyone. Instead of drawing cards from the deck, you push a button on the card dispenser and get a random number of cards, anywhere from 0 to 10. (My fifteen year old did a statistical analysis of how many hits you are likely to make before getting cards, and how many cards are likely to come out, but I'll let you figure out your own strategy.) This random card firing means that you must use a different play strategy than the old UNO, a more complicated one. There are also new cards in the deck, such as "hit-fire" in which you must press the button until the machine fires some cards at you.
