We drove on a “little” road as a shortcut to our destination, Hallstatt, Austria. At one place the road had a 24 degree slope, but thank goodness it was downhill in the direction we were going. When we first arrived in Hallstatt, we knew we had found one of the more beautiful places in the world. We’ve been here several times, but each time we have mostly seen it under clouds, and usually in the rain. Pictures of Hallstatt, a picturesque, beautiful lake-side village, are often used for a calendar, a jig-saw puzzle, a greeting card, or something like that. Prominent in the picture, is a lake-side church with a tall pointy steeple, with the town bunched on the ledge between the mountains and the lake. It’s said people have lived here for 3,000 years, and it's easy to see why. The houses are mostly white stucco with brown tile roofs, and wood balconies with flower pots. We see many people in this area wearing Alpine hats and knickers, and “lader hosen,” the short leather pants, some men... See less

Salzburger Residenz, Salzburg, Austrian Alps | Palace of the Archibishop and court when they were not taking refuge in Hohensalzburg. Stately and ornate. Those of you familiar with the movie 'Amadeus' might have an idea of what I am talking about (even though the movie was filmed in Prague - the architecture and look is very similar). If you like visiting royal palaces or stately homes this you have to see. My reason for going was Mozart-related - he worked and performed here and I simply wanted to see what his working / performing environment was like (fantastic, of course). See less

I awoke lazily on that wispy fall morning in Zell am See. The room at the hotel was next to a mountain stream. It gushed pleasantly The shirt that I had aired out last night on the balcony, swirled lazily in the early morning breeze and the avian orchestra was in the middle of its second movement. Slowly, I realized: This was the day. With Zell am See receding quickly in my rear view mirror and a two-three hour drive ahead of me, I settled into the slow lane. It was an overcast morning in the fall of 98, and the delicious smell of rain was in the air. Hallstatt, a tiny Austrian town in the Alps had haunted me since the day I first saw it at the tail-end of a Rick Steves video. The show was ending and I did not catch the number or the title of the episode. But I had seen the picture so, I thought to myself, I would be able to identify it when I found it again. The fact that I could go to the video store and get a copy of the tape... Nah, that'd be too easy. So began my search odyssey... See less

* As we were leaving the youth hostel in Salzburg, I saw a huge bunch of crow attach and than carry away a cute little bird. * Arrived in Hallstatt, we went to the prehistory museum, walked around the cute little town * Took a ferry ride around the the lake * Had lunch at a place call Pizzeria . Trattoria Pferdestall (translates to Horse Stall) at See strasse 156. It was a former stable on the edge of the lake. The horse stalls inside was converted into "booths". * There is a water fountain near the prehistory museum, that has "trink wasser" was the waterfall. The water was frigid cold, and clear. * Staying at Fruhstuckspension Sarstein, (it's the brown building in the middle of the picture below). The breakfast room faces the lake. So quiet and peaceful. I had aroom with a balconey, and spend the evening sitting outside, watching the sky get dark. * The fog began to roll in as it got later, it got cloudy and chilly agian. See less
