Lafayette's visit to America gave the young republic, whose states then numbered twenty-four, its first chance to show what it could do in entertaining an honored guest. He arrived in August and stayed thirteen months during which he was feted everywhere on a nation-wide tour. A natural product of this patriotic fervor was a liberal supply of souvenir items. Among them were the blue and white transfer-printed dishes from Staffordshire, England. One of the most popular prints of the visit was used to produce a dinner service for the American trade. The print, bearing the title Landing of Gen. Lafayette at Castle Garden, New York, 16th August 1824 appeared on each dish of the service surrounded by a border of small and large flower clusters. Picture Jasper is one one of my favorite stones to work with. Some people like to call them Landscape Agates, but the 85 year old rockhounds would beat you over the head with their canes if they caught you. They remind me of Escher paintings. A landscape within a landscape within a landscape. This great piece of Owyhee (sounds like Hawaii) Picture Jasper comes from the hills along the Oregon/Idaho border. I've set it in a very simple sterling bezel setting and given it a rustic matte finish. It hangs on an 18 inch sterling chain. See less
