Amazon.com Who We Are is another set of rousing anthems from this reflective trio. On their fourth full-length, the Los Angeles three-piece sets the template for a harder-rocking effort with dynamic opener "Disarray," in which singer/guitarist Jason Wade admits he doesn't know where he's going, but "wouldn't have it any other way." The band rocks even harder on album highlight "The Joke," a song inspired by a real-life suicide. It's a risk that pays off, although the lyrics almost make the subject seem more defiant than regretful. Throughout the record, Rick Woolstenhulme's drums sound like they're cranked up to 11--not that there's anything wrong with that (Bryce Soderberg holds his own on bass). In other words, the music isn't shy (or subtle), but Wade's words read more like questions than answers. In listening to Moby's collection of early work and rare remixes, it's clear the diversity of this man's wax was in full effect long before the gospel field recordings of last year's wonderful Play came to the fore. Little pieces of dialogue mingle with gigantic house beats and snippets from sources forever unknown, twisting through songs like the downbeat "UHF" with serpentine ease. His grasp of structure was much different then, however, as these mixes can wander a bit--especially in the hour-plus worth of "Go" remixes he offers up on the second disc. Like Wile E. Coyote before them, they seem to eventually lose sight of what they are trying to do and why, and just use more and more outlandish ruses to reach their target (Brain as the Country and Western singer is my favourite). The concept itself may not have worked if the characters weren't so well written and performed. To my memory there was only ever three continuous characters in the show - Pinky, Brain and occasionally Snowball, a genius hamster and rival to Brain voiced by the late, great Roddy McDowell. —Bono, Introduction to the Psalms One clear indication that Bono and U2 know the Scriptures well is that they sing in the same phrases and patterns as the Scriptures. U2 often borrows lyrics straight from the Bible—a practice most clearly exemplified on their 1983 album War, which closes with the song "40" taken from Psalm 40 and a refrain from Psalm 6. Like many U2 fans, I was drawn into thinking about the connections of their songs to the Bible through their practice of closing concerts with "40." The feeling of a crowd of thousands singing "how long to sing this song" at the top of their lungs is awesome, sending shivers down my spine in a way that, if I may be honest, happens less often than I'd like in church.
