Sure you can right-click a mp3 file and set it to be open with the player of your choice, but that’s not enough. What if you want dvd’s to be opened with vlc instead of totem? What if you want cd’s to be opened with exaile instead of rythmbox? If you search for files mp3’s get opened with totem, … all these things can’t be changed with the provided GUI nor with “gconf-editor”. I hope this will be “fixed” in the next Ubuntu release this October. It’s been said that Ubuntu and Gnome tend to simplify things, and most of the time this is a good thing, just not this time. The “preferred application” dialog is too basic and pretty useless, they should be able to do better in the next release. WiFi Radar creates a default configuration file if it doesn't find one at startup. This file may need to be tweaked before it can "see" any wireless access points. The built-in wireless card in my IBM ThinkPad T40 is seen by Ubuntu as eth0, for example, but WiFi Radar looks at eth2 in the default configuration, or at eth1 if no configuration is found. If you don't see any access points listed in the program's interface and you know they are there, edit the configuration file and make sure the line that begins interface = is pointing at the correct network adapter device. Figure 1 shows how WiFi Radar lists the connections it finds after it has been properly configured as eth0 and had profiles added. Hotplug debugging tips: The files in /etc/hotplug are all scripts, so you can add "echo" statements to them to see where it's going and what it's doing. The *buntu clan recently broke the X Server on 6.06 by providing a buggy upgrade. They fixed it pretty quick, but a black screen of death on a Linux box is truly a scary thing. Now, however, they seem to have borked Intel 3945 wireless support for the second time. I have been running Kubuntu 6.06 since it came out in June. It's been behaving flawlessly (after doing the upgrades to fix the initial bug with it) and I don't know why I felt the need to try out MEPIS, but I did. As with almost all Linux distros, MEPIS wasn't up to the task of running on my laptop so I decided to go back to Kubuntu. Being a good little user, I thought that it would be in my best interests to download the latest Kubuntu 6.06 and install it rather than use my old disk from June. So I did and now I find that my Intel 3945 card doesn't work with the SMP kernel out of the repos. I know from experience that I have install a SMP kernel and then the linux-686-smp package to get my wifi card up. Well, that doesn't... See less

Well, get prepared for some problems: no flashplugin for Firefox, no win32 codecs for MPlayer, no OpenOffice. I couldn't care less for the flashplugin, OpenOffice I've got on my laptop and I hardly use it, but a complete, custom-compiled MPlayer is a must. Here's a way to install it along with the win32 and RealPlayer codecs, LIVE.com streaming support, and more. One way - they say - is to install the ia32-libs, but I wanted to be all clean about it and use the arguably harder ‘chroot' method. This way, one can achiev a modular, easily upgradeble system. Both 64- and 32- bit apps and separated from each other, and all users can - compeletly transparently - call the 32-bit apps from within their 64-bit text consoles and DEs. See less
