The music is lush and assured, if a bit predictable. Hardcore jungle fans are best warned to stay away; this isn't a dance album, really. Bukem, who made his name with his own melodic style of jungle (drum & bass), abandons the furious pace of the rave dance floor in favor of a jazz-like sensibility. Upbeat, but not hard. Complex layering, yet remarkably accessible melodies that you just can't help but tap your foot to. Nimble, but not really fast. Slick, but remarkably natural and acoustic sounding. "The Poets of Thought" start the ball rolling with the Jazz/Hip-Hop Fusion of `The Rhyme goes on', heavily influenced in its construction by jazz, it's as contemplative as it is soothing, backed by ghost-like horns arrangements with a steady textured breakbeat underpinning the whole thing, it's the musical equivalent of driving through the city late at night. If you like any of the Logical Progression series releases, you will certainly love Level 2 - the crew from GLO is notorious for their clean, rolling drum and bass sound and doesn't disappoint with this one. Unfortunately, I happen to love underground hip-hop as well as jungle/DNB, so the tired, early-eighties era lyrics and lackadaisical delivery of MC Conrad ruined the otherwise impeccable beats on disc 1 for me - a complaint I have for all Conrad/GLO tracks . Fortunately, disc 2, which is primarily instrumental, is one of the best sessions the crew has put out on CD thus far, with the exception of one exquisite track (dis)graced by Conrad flows. Thankfully for fans of the retro (if lightweight) pop/soul that is the band's specialty, Jamiroquai are back with their most cohesive effort since 1995's Return of the Space Cowboy. There's still too much blathering on about the cosmos from Stevie Wonder-inspired vocalist Jason Kay, the most egregious example being the subdued and folksy "Black Crow," which takes the bird-in-flight cliché to new lows. Better and much more rugged are the sizzling synth-driven "2001" and the guitar-stoked rave-up "Stop! Don't Panic." The playful, provocative, effortless romance of Jobim makes this a must-have for your collection. My first experience with it was on a 3 and 1/2 hour road trip, driving in the rain alone. The time seemed to pass in minutes. Having arrived at my destination, I was tempted to turn around and go back, just to extend the moment.
