Though they've suffered death, departure and fraught internal and external relationships, No Doubt have kept faith with fun throughout, as The Singles very clearly proves. As their troubles have made them far from prolific, it's culled almost entirely from three albums--Return of Saturn, Rock Steady and their mega-hit Tragic Kingdom--with just the quirky, warped ska of "Trapped in a Box" to represent their eponymously titled major label debut. As said, it's excellent fun, from the opening power anthem "Just a Girl", through the ultra-modern, Madonna-like "Hey Baby" and the urgent, melodious power pop of "Excuse Me Mr" to the Chicago-style break-up ballad "Don't Speak". It's easy to see how this colourful band of Anaheim skanksters came to be seen as an energising antidote to the crushing male miserabilism of grunge. This is it--the one Monty Python album that you must have. A compilation drawn from various films, TV series, and performance sketches, The Final Rip Off consists of two CDs of absolute classics. One of the very first tracks is the famous "Constitutional Peasant" scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Also included are "Spanish Inquisition," "Argument," "Lumberjack Song," and several other sketches that have achieved much-deserved pride of place in popular culture. The members of Monty Python are quite aware of this--the much-loved dead-parrot sketch is listed here as "Parrot (Oh, Not Again)." Despite its somewhat polite, trip-hoppy surface, Dido Armstrong's music frequently rests on a melancholy that can only be called courageous in the current pop world. Few singer-songwriters with 12 million record sales behind them would offer a single such as Life for Rent's "White Flag," which is in part an apology for the "mess and destruction" the narrator has left with her lover. Emotions are even stickier on other tracks, with Dido's Dusty-ish voice coolly sweeping through "Don't Leave Home," one of the creepiest codependent-love songs since "Every Breath You Take," and in "Who Makes You Feel," ticking off a list of reasons why an affair is dying, while also admitting that she still loves the guy. It's a hard-won romanticism, too, that pokes its head up in the tough-minded "This Land is Mine" and "Do You Have a Little Time" ("I'd like to hold you still/Remind you of all you've missed"). It's nice to see Bette Midler putting her spin on an American classic after less-than-convincing detours through adult-contemporary cheese. This tribute focuses on Rosemary Clooney in the early to mid-1950s--so we don't get any of the fabulous Nelson Riddle material--but it's a fairly strong offering. It was produced and arranged by Midler's old musical director, Barry Manilow--who actually dueted with Clooney on a couple of songs in the 1990s and here replaces Bing Crosby on the duet "On a Slow Boat to China." Mostly, the CD is about hits: "Hey There" and "White Christmas" are done in straightforward manner, while Linda Ronstadt fills in for Rosemary's actual sister Betty on a slinky version of "Sisters." Happily, Midler plays "Come On-A My House" down instead of up (the old Bette would have milked its comic aspect) but the singer lets loose on "Mambo Italiano." That's pretty much the only time the Divine Miss M peeks out from behind Clooney's elegant persona, and it's a delight.... See less

If you're anywhere left of center, or even a moderate, or maybe even just right of center, this audio CD contains gems--readings of selections of Dennis Miller's rants from the past few years. This, of course, was before 9/11, and before the year 2002 when Dennis' support (Monday Night Football on ABC and Dennis Miller Live on HBO) were yanked out from under him. This CD is a reminder of the precious commodity we lost when, out of fear or expediency or I-don't-know-why, Dennis decided that the right could do no wrong, and verbally threw the lefties out to the wolves. I just got this CD yesterday, and I relished replaying some of his rants at least twice. In the first rant, Dennis reminds us that "Arts Funding" is far less than 1% of the federal budget, and though art can't build houses, it does educate, beautify, and display human potential. "90% of arts is ****, 4 out of 5 is **** with an asterisk, but oh, that 1%!" He muses on the morality of abortion (taking a middling position),... See less
