MIDDLEBURY, Vt.—John Elder, professor of English and Environmental Studies at Middlebury College, has been selected to receive a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship, one of just 186 scholars nationwide to be chosen from among more than 3,000 applicants. This year's 81st annual awards from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation were announced April 7. Elder plans to use the fellowship award during a sabbatical in 2006-07, when he expects to complete work on a book tentatively titled In Hardwood Groves. Elder says the book will complete a narrative cycle that began with the 1998 publication of Reading the Mountains of Home, in which "the environmental history of the Green Mountains provided a context for re-reading Robert Frost's great poem, 'Directive.' " Combining natural history, literary criticism, conservation and personal memoir, the book has been described as a pioneering work in a new school of "narrative criticism." Traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada for 48 weeks a year for four years. Harvey Young chases fish. Or drifts past them, dangling temptations. Or plants hooked flies just by their noses. He takes other people out in boats to do the same. This is in the lower reaches of a half-dozen rivers in northern California and southern Oregon. The target is salmon and steelhead. If the rivers get messed up, the fish suffer. So does Harvey. He's a big fan of wilderness and other undisturbed watersheds. They make his way of living possible. Harvey grew up in Mill Valley, California, graduated from Tamalpais High School there, then took some science courses at College of Marin. The lure of the rivers was too strong. He quit college and went to pilot rafts -- on the Colorado, through the Grand Canyon, and later in Idaho. In Idaho, part of the attraction of some of the trips was the fishing. "The streams coming out of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness are crystal clear, perfect for trout, because there are no clearcuts, no roads." They fished for westslope cutthroat trout.... See less

Since earliest childhood, studying and celebrating the magnificence of the natural world has been my central passion. Born and raised in California, I spent much of my childhood roaming the hills, exploring creeks , meadows and beaches, and backpacking in the mountains. Fascinated by insects and plants, I became intimately familiar with what I later called "the land of the small," and by the age of l4 I had my first 35mm camera for recording what I found there. A decade of international travel as a scientific field worker, educational tourism leader, and photography instructor greatly expanded my knowledge of natural history opportunities to photograph. Beginning with the Galapagos International Scientific Project in 1964, I made several trips to the Enchanted Isles and also led photographic excursions to the off shore islands and gray whale breeding lagoons of Baja California. I learned to ride a uni in the early 1980s. For months I was just saying to myself, "No, human beings can't do this." My juggling teacher, Steve Aveson, said two things that helped a little: "Don't look down" and "Sit your butt down on the damn unicycle." Don't look down, because it's easier to balance if you have a clear idea of what's horizontal. Sit down, because your legs are working hard enough keeping the wheel under you. They don't need the extra effort of supporting any weight. There's a device called an ultimate wheel, which is a unicycle with the fork and seat removed.
