This album was released in the spring of 1968, a year that produced a great deal of music that's now very hard to listen to. Even the Grateful Dead didn't hit their stride until the "Live/Dead" album of 1969. The Doors were in a slump, the Beatles were at each other's throats, and even the Rolling Stones wouldn't break their British Invasion mold and come into their own until the next year, with "Let It Bleed." There's a gleeful sloppiness to this album. At this time, many garage bands were producing material of their own (remember the Strangeloves' "I Want Candy"?), but there's something different about Quicksilver Messenger Service. Though this sounds like a garage album, it's a garage album by a band of extraordinary talent and discipline. From the opening notes of "Pride of Man," a grossly overlooked anti-war anthem that more peace advocates today should utilize, we're bowled over by the skill and quality of the band. Bill Champlin, who at the age of four mastered his first few chords on the piano, once said of himself, "I was reading music before I was reading English." Champlin, who later made a name for himself as a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and composer, was born on May 21st, 1947 in Oakland, California. In 1966 Champlin founded a new band: "The Sons of Champlin." The Sons" shared the Bay area with other great bands, such as the "Grateful Dead" or "Quicksilver Messenger Service", all preferring on-the-spot improvisations and psychedelic sounds. "Fat City" was the first album recorded by The Sons Of Champlin for Trident Productions in 1966 and 1967. The singles "Sing Me A Rainbow" and "Fat City" were released in 1967. However, differences between management and the band ended in the termination of The Sons contract, and the album never saw light of day... until now. It's definitely different than what one would expect from The Sons, but this was recorded prior to their coming of age, so to speak. I really like this CD. It contains 15 previously unreleased songs, plus two of the audition versions of original Sons songs, the two previously mentioned singles, and more. The booklet accompanying the CD is worth the price, and the pictures are an added treat. The Sons sound on this CD is similar to some of the better known harmony heavy bands of this era, only better. I remember hearing this album back when it first came out at my cousin's wedding and now all these years later finally bought it on CD. WOW! I can see why the band members call it their favorite of all the Sons' albums. Every tune is upbeat and full of the blue-eyed soul and good vibes that were the Sons' trademark. Not only that but every song is so much fun to listen to. If I'm bummed about anything before I put the CD on, I quickly forget whatever's wrong and just get into the vibe of the music! Truly the Sons were and are the most underrated band ever to come out of San Francisco. It's nice WTTD finally got released on CD, not so nice the Sons themselves don't make any money from it. If you're a recent Sons "convert" like me, I suggest like another reviewer did that you first buy their LIVE CD, then this one. But make sure TO buy them both! See less

This recording of a February 2002 concert finds the Sons in fine form. Bill Champlin, who has been a member of Chicago since 1981 and who won two Grammy awards for song writing (After the Love is Gone and Turn Your Love Around) is "back with the band he's supposed to be with" and he is clearly having a great time. His guitar duets with Tal Morris are dynamite as are his B3 with all the stops out solos, and his singing is as strong as ever. The rest of the band are no slouches either -- Geoff Palmer on keys and vibes is nothing short of astonishing, the rhythm section of Jim Preston and David Schallock are as solid as you can find in any band, anywhere, and the horn section anchored by Mic "Brass Kicks Ass" Gillette is right on the money. Great songs, great performances -- buy this cd now! See less

Recorded in Bruce Walford's studio in San Anselmo, this album sees the Sons in transition. Tim Cain, the sax player who co-founded the band with Bill Champlin back in 1965, had left, as had trumpet player Jim Beem. The stripped down band has an opportunity to stretch out on a number of fine Bill Champlin compositions, and the album also features the recorded debut of Terry Haggerty's "Follow Your Heart", a tune that would stay in the band's set list until Haggerty's departure in 2001 (a more polished version of the tune appeared on the out of print Circle of Love album, and there is a great performance on The Sons Live CD released in 1997). Soon after the release of this album Bill Champlin took the first of his sabaticals from the group, returning to a new rhythm section and a revised name (Yogi Phlegm) several months later. Not quite as good as Welcome to the Dance, this album still cooks pretty hard and is definitely worth a listen. See less

The band's funk-infused R&B and jazz-based tempos continued to set the Sons apart, as did their outstanding musicianship. Take the Money And Run was Woody Allen's first real film to direct himself and it remains one of his funniest. Disguised as a documentary, this 1969 film tells the hilarious story of Virgil Starkweather, the world's most inept (if stupidly optomistic) thief. Like most of Woody Allen's early films, everything is played almost solely for the laughs it might provide and nearly forty years later, it all holds up very well. Lots of hilarious stuff in here (at times, this film is the funniest Mel Brooks film that Mel Brooks never made) but my personal favorite bits would have to include: Virgil's parents who disguise their indentities by wearing Groucho Marx glasses but will be familiar to anyone whose seen any of Allen's films, Virgil's attempt to rob a bank is foiled when none of the clerks can read his bad handwriting, another robbery goes wrong when a rival gang decides to rob the same bank at the same time, Virgil's attempt to escape from prison by making a fake gun out of soap is... Tom began making Japanese-inspired linoleum and wood block prints of Mt. Tamalpais when he was a teenager. In 1975 he collected these small, mostly blue-and-white prints into his first handprinted book "Twenty-eight Views of Mount Tamalpais" (Cowell Press, 1975). Since then, Killion has produced increasingly colorful woodcut prints of Mt. Tam, and he is currently planning to produce a trade edition book juxtaposing his Tamalpais "Views" (how many is not yet certain) with a selection of 150 years of poetry celebrating the mountain. Here you can see many of Killion's more recent Mt. Tamalpais images, and we will be adding a complete page-by-page catalogue of the original "28 Views" book in the near future.
