The Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) was created by State law in 1963 to regulate the boundaries of cities and special districts. There is a LAFCO in each of the 58 counties of California. The objectives of LAFCO are: * to encourage efficient service areas for services provided by cities, counties, and special districts; * to guide urban development away from prime agricultural lands and open space resources; and * to promote orderly growth and discourage urban sprawl. The focus of the research in my laboratory is the eukaryotic nucleus: its structure and function. We use an in vitro nuclear reconstitution system which efficiently assembles nuclei in the test tube from soluble and membrane components. The system makes use of an extract of Xenopus eggs, which store abundant amounts of disassembled components in preparation for the rapid cleavages of early division. Upon addition of DNA or chromatin to an egg extract, nuclei containing nuclear membranes, a nuclear lamina, and nuclear pores quickly assemble. The in vitro reconstituted nuclei are capable of nuclear import, DNA replication, pol III transcription, and even mitotic disassembly. A major interest of the laboratory is the nuclear pore, a large macromolecular complex of 120 million daltons which spans the nuclear membranes. Nauenberg received his Ph.d in physics at Cornell (with H. Bethe) and taught at Columbia and Stanford before coming to the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1966. He was one of the founding members of its Physics Dept. where he is now Professor Emeritus. His primary research interests are in particle physics, condensed matter physics, and nonlinear dynamics, and he has written numerous articles in these areas publications. His most recent work is on a new quantum mechanical treatment of neutrino and neutral meson oscillations and on the dynamics of wave packets in weak external fields. I found that I liked this system so well I decided to join Kaiser Permanente right out of residency and I've been here ever since.
