Whether he was training for a marathon or writing a magazine photo caption, William Goggins was a perfectionist. His keen eye for detail and uncanny skill for literary devices became the defining style of the San Francisco-based technology magazine Wired, where he was an editor for 10 years. Mr. Goggins, 43, died Sunday while running in the San Francisco Marathon. Born in San Francisco, Mr. Goggins was raised in Mill Valley as the eldest of three children. As a student at Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, he earned a perfect score on the SAT college entrance exam and graduated as his class salutatorian. "He had one of those brains that was encyclopedic," said his sister, Aimee Goggins. "He could cross-reference across film, philosophy, literature and quote text from movies."
