The Cox Chair (2005) demonstrates a significant event in 21st-century industrial design. Crafted from three-dimensional veneer, this chair realizes the single shell molded plywood chair that Charles Eames held as an ideal. The modern material is the result of Reholz technology that molds a 3D form of plywood in two ways: concave for the seating area and convex for the arms. It's a shape that was previously available only in plastic chairs, never before with the warmth of wood. The 3D process uses six layers of oak veneer, bonded together for a fluent shell that's only 6mm thick. Strong and comfortable, the Cox Chair swivels on its four slim legs and the deep seat is slightly shaped like a Windsor chair. Lightly scaled, with soft curves and clearly defined edges, it is suitable for dining, lounge or office. The Cox Chair was recognized with a Frankfurt Messe Design Plus Prize, awarded to products distinguished by a combination of innovative technology and design. Made in Italy. See less

George Nelson began with the legs when designing his Swag Leg Group (1958). He insisted that they be made of metal and machine formed, and discovered his solution in "swaging," a method of using pressure to taper and curve a metal tube. For the Swag Leg Chair, the question became how to connect the four legs, and through Nelson's own engineering the resulting base appears deceptively simple. To create the chair shell, Nelson got permission from Charles and Ray Eames to use a patented process they developed for molding plastic. Adapting this process to suit his Swag Leg Chair, Nelson created separate shells for the chair seat and back. Originally made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic, these shells are now made with recyclable polypropylene and are consistent with the Herman Miller commitment to be a good steward of the earth's resources.
