That is, it was a necessity, until it occurred to me I could heavily mulch the garden area outside the flock’s sleeping quarters in the greenhouse pens, net it with electronet fencing, and release the birds onto it during the day. (I used several 800-lb round bales of old hay, since a dry season did not permit a heavy fall cutting off my pasture.) The results were more than satisfactory: The mulch was deep enough (six to eight inches) to prevent freezing of the soil in my climate (Zone 6b), and the busy chickens stcratched down through it to live animal food (earthworms, slugs and slug eggs, etc.), and germinating seed in the hay—both a terrific boost in nutrition. The mulch absorbed the poops laid down and scratched in by the flock, rather than accumulating as a slick glaze on a patch of bare frozen dirt, eager to run to the nearest stream, lake, or estuary (to say nothing of the groundwater) with the first thaw. During his time as the director of the Rothamstead Agricultural Research Station in Great Britain, Dr. Clive Edwards developed a vermicomposting system design that eliminated the labor- and time-intensive task of separating worms from the finished material. Referring to the design as "continuous flow," his method is commonly used for medium- to large-scale vermiprocessing systems around the world. In the last few years several manufacturers have generated home-scale vermicomposters based on Edwards' continuous flow concept and these systems are becoming increasingly popular. Continuous flow bins are relatively deep containers with raised floors made from widely spaced welded wires. The system is generally bedded by laying several sheets of newspaper over the wire floor, on top of which is spread roughly six inches of damp bedding. A living ecosystem of worms, sowbugs and bacteria are invited to this table. They are a part of the digestive system that starts with a person discarding food leftovers and shredded paper into the portal at the top. The bacteria and sowbugs begin breaking down the waste and the worms soon join in to further digest it into a rich compost that sprinkles out of the bottom of the fabric bag that hangs beneath the table. This compost is used as a fertilizer for plants, such as those at the base of the table. The human plays an important part at the table by eating, feeding the food waste to the worms, feeding the resulting fertilizer to the plants, or by simply sitting and appreciating the living ecosystem she/he is a part of. A cross-section of the activity inside the top 9 inches of the compost is made visible using an infrared security camera connected to an LCD screen built into the table. By Philip and Joyce Mahan After some study and experimentation, we have set up a productive food chain-- table scraps to earthworms to catfish--in our back yard. The project is satisfactory in many respects, utilizing waste materials to produce fresh fish for food and at the same time yielding ample compost for a small garden. The material cost is minimal. The whole operation can be set up for less that $15.00. The equipment occupies only about 12 square feet of space, and the entire assembly can be easily moved if necessary. The materials can be very simple: Two 55-gallon steel drums, three panes of glass 24 inches square, and a medium-sized aquarium air pump. One of the drums will serve as a tank for the fish, oxygen being supplied by the air pump; and the second drum should be cut in half to provide two bins for the worms. The panes of glass are used as covers for the worm bins and fish tank, and for ease and safety in handling can be framed with scrap lumber. We chose catfish... See less

I ignored it over winter and it didn't matter...I still have beautiful compost. Due to health issues I am thinking of worm composting. I have basement area that would work perfect. I like the looks of the 3,4,5 tray systems but first and foremost want a good sytem that works. Which system takes the least physical effort? Just two of us, how many trays,(thinking 3 tray system), how many worms? Is mail order the best way to get worms? Any thoughts/input most appreciated. The byproduct is a rich finished compost that is a readily usable or salable product reducing the need for chemical fertilizer. Just turn the harvest handle, remove the door and collect the "worm free" finished compost from the bottom tray. Traditional methods of vermicomposting have been based on beds or windrows on the ground containing waste up to 18" deep, but such methods have numerous drawbacks. They require large areas of land for large-scale production and are relatively labor intensive, even when machinery is used for adding waste to beds. More importantly, such systems process wastes relatively slowly, taking anywhere from 6 to 18 months for processing to be complete. There is good evidence that a large proportion of the essential plant nutrients, that are in a relatively soluble form, are washed out and also a significant proportion can volatilize during this long processing period.
