thirteen years ago today. someone other than me. her mother pushed her out. nine months after the make-up sex, voila. she came out looking just like her father, i’ve seen the pictures, and now she’s morphed into both of them. don’t trust a baby by what she looks like at first sight. but still those eyebrows, that hair, and of course those eyes. i’d know them anywhere. she woke up so early. last year in her depression we couldn’t get her out of bed, and now look, all the lights in the house are on and it is a pitch black morning. her new bike there in the kitchen with a white bow on it. and tickets to a concert. love, dad and courtney i scrawled on the envelope late last night. she is grateful in the way that considerate children are, all full of overly sweet thank yous and doting kindness. she knows she is being watched. she loves this tiny drama. to walk to her school it takes eight minutes. you’d think we made her do it while pulling the house behind her, the incredulity. only three...
