Take one pocket fabric piece and fold it in half wrong sides together. Press. Open the pocket up again and insert the interfacing between the layers and close the pocket again. You should now have a nice 3.5×7-inch pocket. Baste along the open edge (the one across from the folded edge) together. If you’re a fan of top-stitching, top-stitch across the folded edge. You can also use some fancy stitches here if your machine has them. If you want to embroider anything on the pockets, now is the time to do so. Keep in mind that you’ll lose about 1/2+1/8 inches around the sides due to the seams and top-stitching.Repeat for other pocket. The car organizer. I love mine! When I posted about them, several of you asked for a tutorial, and these might be a great holiday gift. So sneak into your sister's minivan and take a few measurements. Or make one for your husband's car to hold those Manly-Man Necessities like his tape measure and small tool kit. Hey, wait- I have both of those in my car too... The things you'll need: medium weight fabric, coordinating thread, a sewing machine, a piece of 3/4" elastic about 30 inches long, and a messy car. Keep in mind, to make them like I did, your headrests need to be removable. If yours aren't, you'll have to get creative with the tops. When I say medium weight, I mean something thicker than say quilters cotton (so it hangs nicely) but thinner than denim (you'll be sewing through multiple layers.) I used a gray twill so it would blend in with the car upholstery, but you could always use something bright to jazz up the back seat or use contrasting fabric or patchwork for the pockets.... 1) cut a 9" by 7" piece. this will be used for the lining and the outer fabric 2) a 9" by 2 3/4" piece. this is for one of the card pockets! use the same fabric that you used for the outer fabric. 3) a 9" by 3 3/4" piece. this is for the other card pocket and use | the lining fabric for this!! *i would also suggest using a medium weight interfacing for the "flimsier" fabric for stability! i wouldn't use it for both though because then it would be WAY too bulky. STEP ONE! - iron fabric. trace everything and cut it all out! yum! this is what all your cut out pieces should look like! A= lining fabric, 9" X 2 3/4" // B= outer fabric, 9" X 3 3/4 " STEP TWO! - using the two card slot fabric pieces (A and B.) fold them in half long way so that the good sides are facing each other. sew up the side with the stictching being as close to the edge as you can make it! i'll say its about 1/8" but don't hold me to it. i just make it small! STEP THREE! -pull them right-side-out and iron them out flat.... See less

Now, this isn't quite the norm nowadays but mothers and fathers are getting back in the habit of being crafty for their and their kid's sakes. For those who are starting to get the itch to stitch, we wanted to create a project that could be done without patterns and in as short amount of time as possible. Therefore, we present step-by-step instructions (and nifty little illustrations) on how to make our Nested Fold-up Crayon Pouch. The instructions follow below. Yesterday, when we posted the great fabrics from Repro Depot that we thought would inspire anyone to get sewing, we said that making a bib was "as basic as it gets." Now, that may not be completely true when you don't even know where to start. We're not master seamstresses by any stretch of the imagination and even making a bib can give us a headache, but a bib gives high returns for relatively low effort. All you have to do it ditch the complicated steps (like encasing an entire bib in double fold bias tape). Unless you're good and stuff and sewing and then you can embellish away! Here's a basic bib pattern we threw together (with instructions) that should help you showcase the fabulous fabrics that you find. Here are the steps I follow for making an adorable reversible dress. There's a photo for each step, and it appears above the text that describes it. Cut out a front and a back for both the inside and outside of your dress. You can just use a pattern for any baby/toddler size jumper dress. 2. Put the front and back of each dress together with right sides facing. Sew the right side seam on one dress and the left side seam on the other. 3. Open the dresses and lay one on top of the other with right sides facing. The sewn seams will line up in the middle and the fronts and backs of each dress will line up. 4. Sew the dresses together at the bottom. I leave a 2-3 inch opening in this seam to flip the dress back to right side when it's done. If you do not leave the hole here, you can leave one... See less

A couple of people have asked me if I use a pattern for the little bags I sew. Not usually, but the bags are generally adaptations of one basic design. I thought I'd share that design in case anyone is interested. First, cut out the fabric! You can cut out either one piece where the fold would be the bottom of the bag or two pieces (you'd have to cut out two pieces if the pattern in the fabric goes in one direction; otherwise, the design would be upside down on one side of the bag). I use 1/4" seam allowances, so if you want the finished bag to be 5" wide and 7" tall, your one piece would need to be 5 1/2" wide and 14 1/2" long. The example is one piece, folded: You will want to cut a lining as well. It will be the same size as the exterior. Stitch the sides of the bag, right sides together and using a 1/4" seam. Also stitch the bottom if you cut two pieces instead of one. Next, you will sew in the corners of the bottom of the bag to create a flat bottom. Grab the bottom corner and... See less

Draft the pattern following the dimensions below. Then cut out 1 each of the following, using the same pattern piece – outside fabric, lining, wadding and interfacing. Fuse the interfacing to the lining piece and the wadding to the outside piece. NOTE: If you’re using lighter weight fabric than a canvas or drill, fuse interfacing to both the lining and outside pieces. On the lining piece, sew (the prickly side of) a Velcro strip across the curved edge of the flap, 1.5cm from the straight edge TIP: Measure and draw a chalk line to follow before you attach the Velcro. Sew 2 x 10cm strips of (the fuzzy side of) Velcro to the front of the bag body, about 10cm in from each of the side seams. TIP: Use a square ruler to measure and mark the Velcro placement with chalk - this will help to keep it at a right angle.
