"Tulipomania" reached its height in Holland during the 1630s and 40s. Wildly speculative buying and selling of rare species became a national scandal, precipitating a major economic crisis. Specialists such as Jacob Marrel were commissioned to paint books of tulips that served essentially as sales catalogues to display the flowers when not in season. The double page of delicately-painted watercolors in the Museum's collection formed part of an album. Four species of tulips are depicted with their names incribed below: Boter man (Butter Man), Joncker (Nobleman), Grote geplumaceerde (The Great Plumed One), and Voorwint (With the Wind). The Museum's vase features tulips adapted from the original watercolor drawing. See less
