Throughout human history, forests and woodlands in Western Europe experienced a high anthropogenic influence. In densely populated areas forests were cleared and converted to arable land or were exploited for the supply of firewood and construction timber. In Flanders, it is estimated that the forest cover by the end of the 13th century was even lower than in the 19th century. To date, several assortments of timber, available on the local wood market during the Roman era and the Middle Ages, have become part of our cultural heritage. Archaeological remains, historical buildings, panel paintings and religious sculptures are only a few examples of constructions and objects that were created by processing wood. Especially European oak (Quercus robur L. and Q. petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) was highly esteemed by craftsmen. Tree-ring series of oak have the characteristic that they tend to crossdate. Q. petraea and Q. robur are two closely interfertile species that exhibit phenotypic differences but only show extremely low genetic differentiation for isozymes, chloroplast or nuclear DNA markers. Morphological characters (petiole length, hairiness and number of intercalary veins), and physiological traits related to anoxia and drought stress response, are among the main features involved in species differences. With the main goal of identifying genomic regions involved in the molecular differentiation of the two species, a threefold approach is conducted: (1) a molecular approach (cDNA-AFLP) to identify genes involved in response to anoxia or drought stresses; (2) a physiological approach to subdivide response to abiotic stresses into various components (enzyme activity, biomass allocation, stomatal conductance, rate of CO2 assimilation); (3) a statistical approach based on QTL detection for traits related to leaf morphology and response to abiotic stresses. 100% solid European Oak "A" grade is used to make this hardwood worktop. The staves used to make up the hardwood worktop are 40mm thick and ranging from 38 - 42mm wide depending on supplier. All our hardwood worktops are in the white (unfinished) and square edged to allow the customer / fitter to apply their own desired profile. They are sanded to a fine 150grit and ready to be oiled or finished with the product of your choice. The hardwood worktops are all individually shrink wrapped. Oak is a natural product and vulnerable to movement caused by moisture levels in the air, the individual shrink wrap helps to minimise the risk of a hardwood worktop bending before it is sealed with your chosen finish.
