The rhymes themselves are very short and hold very little action. However, the illustrations for each contain loads of energy, imagination and fun. The main characters in both rhymes are little boys, and much like the boy in Where the Wild Things Are, they face danger, defy potential evil and master courage beyond their years. The reader cannot help but create personal dialogue and alternative story lines to those that are provided. Indeed, this is the magic behind Sendak's illustrations. Because verbs are often hard to picture, this title may be one that an adult shares with children more than one they will read on their own. Act, for instance shows a young girl bedecked with many necklaces adjusting her hat. Although she is in the spotlight, supposedly on a stage, the link from word to image is tenuous at best. Other verbs—dance, hide, whistle—are more concrete. The art, however, is terrific. Colorfully patterned papers and great use of line make visual links from one page to the next. I loved this book! The illustrations of animals on each spread are graceful works of art. The delicate use of line, color and shape sometimes looks Japanese, sometimes like a collage made of construction paper. Others are loose pen-and-ink drawings. You can tell the late Charley Harper loved animals, as his affection for them jumps off the page. There is so much personality! In D is for Dog, the smiling spaniel has dirt on his nose and legs, and you can almost see him panting. In I is for Iguana, two giant lizards battle for a captive tiny pig, swinging their tails and rearing up. Q is for Quail shows whirring wings on a fat and happy bird. The inside covers show a collage of dozens of other Harper animals, most of which are not used in the book. The board book itself is a little more sturdy than most. It will hold up well. Charley Harper's ABC's is an outstanding way to introduce fine artwork to young children. Other good choices include Zen Ties and Walt Disney's Cinderella. See less

Suddenly the boy has the power to bring life to things that he paints. Liang uses this gift for good, until he must use his skill to outsmart an evil emperor who wants to use the magic brush for his own greedy purposes. The ending is a bit troublesome- not as completely fair and peaceful as we might like - but then, the tale is based on an old Chinese legend which, like Grimms' fairy tales, were probably a lot more scary than story books today. Still, the story is wonderful and exciting and the illustrations, though subtle, are lovely --delicate but colorful ink and watercolor drawings with lots of detail. See less

Today I got it out to read to a first grade class that incidentally had heard it yesterday from their classroom teacher. After I offered to read something else by the same author, they begged me to read Tikki Tikki Tembo to them again. Students love to chant Tikki's long name each time they hear it. Whether or not this is an authentic Chinese folktale, it is a humorous attention-getter that still has a good moral to it. It does provide an opportunity to point out how Chinese names are usually shorter than Japanese names, something most kids in our school would not be aware of. What amazes me is that in this age of fancy graphics students still are drawn to these simple illustrations. A recommended read-aloud! See less
