This is so brand new; we had to snap the pictures with our phone! We found these in New York just a few days ago and they are so unbelievably adorable that we immediately fell in love with them! What are they you ask? Easy: pop-out placemats. Think of them, as placemats with a name card built in, cool, no? We simply adore them! They are made out of a beautiful, fiber rich paper, 13” x 17” (33 x 43 cm) in size and currently are only available in a wonderful cream colour. Three variations are available: The Birdcage, the Mailbox and lastly the Tree and all have a designated space to put the name. A set comes with 10 place mats and all you have to do is pop them out and fold them up, done, that's it. Not quite actually, you still have to conjure up a fab dinner to go alongside these fab placemats! But when my adult friends come over and want to sit by candlelight listening to classical music and discussing lit'trahtuhr, it's nice to have something grown up to serve them instead of telling them to stick their Balzac up their Proust. The Lock Top wine stopper is the easiest way to preserve the last few glasses in a bottle. With just a touch of a button you seal the bottle to keep air out, and it just takes one more touch to break the seal and open the bottle again. Because seriously, if you have people over drinking wine by candlelight, the last thing you need floating around your wine is more hot air. I have been excited about the Ingo Maurer lighting exhibit since it hit the Cooper-Hewitt’s calendar. It is a retrospective of four decades of Maurer’s work (and the man is not even retired yet!). The show includes all of his major works, unseen prototypes, one-off pieces, his commercial line, and videos and photographs documenting his creative process. A quote of his (from a display video) that really struck me went roughly like this: “Most lighting designers spend their time trying to come up with ways to cover the light bulb; I am looking for ways to reveal it.” Rarely do lamps make it into museum exhibits, but Maurer’s work can hang with the paintings. —Anne E.
