Everything that forms a company's identity—from its name and practices to its product details—affects consumers' perceptions of its authenticity. Juggling philosophical concepts, in-depth case studies and ad slogans, Gilmore and Pine (The Experience Economy) run into trouble with a chapter called Fake, Fake, It's All Fake, which eviscerates the entire idea of authenticity: Despite claims of 'real' and 'authentic' in product packaging, nothing from businesses is really authentic. (10/15/09) As its title implies, this book targets non-geeks: anyone who today uses a computer, whether it be a windows machine or a mac, or linux. I find the author is true to the book's audience, and its objectives. Whether you just recently started using Ubuntu, or whether you're thinking about making the switch, this book will help you. The author's experience with computers, with Linux, and with Ubuntu specifically really shows through. Although I'm a geek, and although I've been using Ubuntu for approximately a year and a half, there were still a number of things I learned from this book. A practical book, easy to read. Also a quick read. You won't find yourself spending an inordinate amount of time wading through the book. The book invites you to your computer and to follow along and get things done in your environment as you go through each chapter. Also, you're not forced into having to follow the book sequentially. Sociologist Patillo-McCoy challenges the myth that a thriving black middle class has relocated to white suburban neighborhoods, abandoning the black underclass in inner-city wastelands. She demonstrates that the majority of the black middle class are living in black communities, which encompass poor black neighborhoods. As a result, a vulnerable, underemployed black middle class has to contend with inadequate public schools and high crime and poverty rates. (06/19/09) Wow . . . this book was a trip. Frank Reynolds was a member of the San Francisco chapter of the Hell's Angels way back in '66, when this book was written (or rather, transcribed). He was the stereotypical degenerate scooter trash, and writes of mainlining speed and dropping huge doses of acid on a daily basis. As time progresses, the drugs clearly damage his brain, resulting in a psychotic break with reality. The Frank Reynolds who wrote the first chapter is different from the Frank who wrote the middle chapter, and the polar opposite of the Frank who concludes the book. This makes for a scary anti-drug message far more effective than propaganda like "Go Ask Alice." Frank starts out as a fairly decent fellow who loves motorcycles and enjoys partying. Halfway through the book, he becomes enamoured with all these "profound" thoughts he begins having, and seems to believe that he has been specially chosen by God to spread some sort of confusing message about the importance of "Love" as...
