A few years ago, the church located at 3824 W. Irving Park was in disarray. Like many other properties in the City of Chicago, it could have very easily been subjected to careless demolition. Rather, as Jeremy Junkin Art Director at Tapestry Center says, "We felt like the building had a lot of value... and we didn’t want to see it just torn down and turned into another condo." He goes on to explain, "We look forward to the many ways we’ll be able to serve our community through arts, music, public forums and whatever else may come our way. We hope that others will be inspired by what we’ve done." Tapestry Center is a very nice example of what happens when adaptive reuse plans are implemented. Its important to emphasize the parallels behind the building and the photos. Demolition prematurely ends the cycle of life for a building and destroys the direct connections we have to out past and the relations we can make with our communities in the future. This is a primarily rock club for people who like to see live music in intimate quarters, though the club's hip-hop, Latin, new-country, and electronic offerings are equally successful. Offering everything from local bands with promise to established touring acts to superstars like the Rolling Stones (fer real -- the STONES!), Double Door's booking power is unequalled for a club its size. With the feel of a rehearsal room/basement, the club's sound system and layout are prime for music lovers (though sometimes harder on shorter music fans stuck in the back). You'll stand, with drink in hand, but the raised stage, open view, and mostly excellent bookings are worth it. The Museum is pleased to announce two more upcoming exhibits — Plastic Surgery: Form and Function and Diabetes: A Global Epidemic and You. The Museum's newest exhibit, Beyond Broken Bones, tells the whole story of orthopedics and prosthetics from Ancient Egypt to the present day. The Museum proudly presents Warsong: Iliad Cenotaphs, an exhibition of sculptures by Jonathan Gabel, and Marked, a mixed-media installation by Joseph Kohnke, both on view through April 18, 2008. The historic lakefront mansion that houses the Museum is a distinctive venue available for special events and tours, including lectures, meetings, receptions, and dinners. See less

The bright yellow Chicago Water Taxi suprised everyone last year by showing up on the Chicago River in the spring to ferry people back and forth from the Wrigley Building (by the Windella boat tour dock) to the Metra Station at Union Station. The problem with Union Station which serves the major north and west suburbs is that it is nowhere near downtown or the north part of the loop and Michigan Ave. (1.5 miles from where I work) So, the Water Taxi replaces a long crowded bus ride for the same price $2.00 and its faster too. The Chicago Water Taxi only runs in the spring, summer and fall because of the ice and cold in the Chicago River in the winter. The boat is covered but partially open and looks like it may have been a repainted repurposed tour boat. Anyway, check out the Chicago Water Taxi for the reasons one of my co-workers mentioned: 1. The Chicago Water Taxi is faster than taking a bus to and from Union Station. 2. It’s cheap. You can’t beat $2.00 per ride. (way cheaper than a... See less

The Beverly-Bi isn’t quite so easy, as you need a bit of willpower and have to walk about seven blocks to complete it, but it’s no less venerable than the Taylor Street Twosome.
