The main character in Breath is called Salz: S for the salvation of his soul, A for ability and action, L for loyalty, and Z for zeal (salz also means "salt" in Latin- or some such language). He's sweet and willful, tenacious, clever, brave... but Salz's one great weakness prevails over all of his more useful characteristics. Salz is sick quite often. He has a peculiar disease which makes him "salty" and which the townsfolk and farmers of Hameln regard as symbolic that he's from the devil. This is fantasy book (one of few I have read) is about a young 17 year old mermaid named Sirena who tempts human men into the sea that shemight gain immortality along with her nine sisters. But young Sirena witnesses the killing of one of her sisters and sees that no good comes from tricking men into thinking they're love with the sirens/mermaids to recieve the immortality they desire. Sirena runs away and finds solace in inhabiting an abandoned island and soon finds a human young man who has been left behind due to a wound. Sirena cares for him and watches over him and soon the two become friends and then lovers. Just as Philoctetes (the young man) and Sirena loose sense of time in the book, so does the reader.
