Three basic catagories: drive imaging (Ghost), continuous backup (GoBack, Shadow), traditional backup (Retrospect, Backup MyPC). No single solution is best. A drive imaging solution coupled with a continuous or traditional backup solution should cover all the bases.

Burlier Backup Software...

Full-featured app includes licenses for two clients. Can back up over a network as easily as to an internal hard drive; but it won't back up multiple PCs concurrently. ( Feb 05)

NTI's Less-Than-Reliable...

See this at: pcworld.com| Added on 03/14/06

The promise of set-it-and-forget-it data backup is appealing. Unfortunately, I found that NTI's Shadow 2 did not always work as advertised. Shadow 2 functions in the background to maintain a copy of your main drive's data on a second drive (internal... See more more

A biting review based on real-world experience. In backup software, consumer trust is critical. NTI dropped the ball on this one.

Norton Ghost 9.0

See this at: pcmag.com| Added on 03/14/06

Norton Ghost 9.0 is based in large part on PowerQuest's Drive Image, which Symantec acquired in late 2003. Norton Ghost shines at full-system recovery, and with its new incremental image feature, it becomes viable for single-file and folder restores... See more more

I find this to be slooowwwww... FULL Back up (max compression) of a 60GB drive to a 300GB NAS (Maxtor Shared Storage) over 100Mbit Ether takes takes 8 hours. INCREMENTAL backup (same drive, same device, 65GB data) takes 9 (NINE) hours. This almost makes daily incrementals impractical. Plus, when executing, it runs at normal priority, stealing CPU cycles from the login session. This causes hangs and pauses; very distracting while doing development.

Acronis True Image 8.0

See this at: pcmag.com| Added on 03/14/06

The easiest way to back up a high-capacity hard drive is to image it by creating a compressed copy from which you can either restore the entire drive or extract individual files. The leading imaging programs right now are Acronis True Image 8.0 and... See more more

Simpler and faster than Ghost. Bottom line: "If you use Ghost with no trouble, there's no reason to switch. But if you're in search of a drive-imaging program, start with True Image."

Norton GoBack 4.0

See this at: pcmag.com| Added on 03/14/06

Given Symantec's history and reputation, it comes as no surprise that Norton GoBack 4.0 is a well-designed, economical product, though the company has done little with it since acquiring it from Roxio in 2003. Our experience indicated that its real... See more more
