(12/06/08) A handmade majolica glazed terracotta tile set into a sterling silver bezel-ed dog tag. Oxidized and brushed for a rustic finish. This piece measures 3/4 inch wide and 1 inch tall not including the ring it hangs from. An 18 inch sterling silver oxidized chain is included. It may be shortened upon request. Just add your preferred length to notes to seller upon check out. The process: I start with raw terracotta clay and form a tile. That tile once dried has to be sanded to make sure it will fit into a bezel. Then it goes into the kiln for the first firing. Once fired each little tile is glazed with three coats of white base glaze and sanded with fine steel wool. Then the fun part begins. The tile is then hand painted with majolica glazes in the traditional method of over glazing, before going into the kiln for the second firing. I have left a soft satin finish and added slight hammer marks to give the effect of a ring created by metalsmiths more than 2000 years ago. There is a tiny flaw on one side of the bezel, an indication of its handmade nature. This ring is perfect by itself, or fabulous stacked with some of my textured rings!
