This pin is adapted from a small sculpture representing cornflowers in a vase rendered in gold, diamonds, and enamel designed by Peter Carl Fabergé (Russian, 1846–1920), jeweler to the last two czars of the Romanov dynasty. Fabergé revolutionized the way jewelry was evaluated in Russia by emphasizing creativity and workmanship over the use of precious stones and metals. His studio produced a wide variety of objets d'art, including magnificent jewelry, clocks, enamel cigarette cases, boxes, frames, and his ultimate achievement, a series of jeweled Easter eggs created for the Czars Alexander III and Nicholas II of Russia. Produced in cooperation with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and made expressly for the Metropolitan Museum in the United States. 24K gold plate and resin, with crystals.
