Night of the Living Dead was a classic that revitalized a certain corner of the cinema, and Dawn of the Dead was nothing short of epic. Day of the Dead, however, has always been regarded as a comedown compared to those twin peaks--and perhaps it is. But on its own terms, this is an awfully effective horror movie, made with Romero's customary social satire and cinematic vigor--when a "retrained" zombie responds to the "Ode to Joy," the film is in genuinely haunting territory. The story is set inside a sunken military complex, where Army and medical staff, supposedly working on a solution to the zombie problem, are going crazy (strongly foreshadowing the final act of 28 Days Later). I have never seen a horror movie so many times, heck I've never seen any movie so many times. Sure the special effects are discouraging but who could of better been cast as the reluctant hero than Bruce Campbell? It has cheaply thrown in nudity and unusual amounts of blood which give it that early 80's horror film feeling. It's easy to pick out flaws and inconsistencies throughout the films, but thats not the point. The point is to make you laugh, and then scare your pants off. Evil Dead II - The first Evil Dead film was pure horror. The third is pure comedy. Sam Raimi's "Evil Dead II" is a mixture of both horror and comedy - which is why it works so well. This story of two sisters who return to a fractured family after being away grabs you from the start - what can't Su-mi remember? and are the things she remembers accurate or dreams? I won't go into too much detail in fear of giving anything away but rest assured this plot is gripping. The viewer is intently focused on the plot as it unfolds before you in a most unnatural way. Certain dialogues are repeated throughout the film by different actors with different connotations and in different time periods. This is confusing at first (but much of what is going on is a mystery and somewhat confusing) and then makes sense of everything at the very end. As mentioned previously, Battle Royale is an unforgiving movie but like all great films there are pockets of resistance and liberation. This exceedingly disturbing and deeply saddening film about watching young kids killing each other out of a primal need to survive should disturb anyone with a shred of humanity left in them.
