Throughout the '80s and early '90s, the group racked up nine Top 40 hits and seven of those singles hit the Top Ten. Greatest Hits collects all of those hits -- including "Need You Tonight," "What You Need," "Devil Inside," "New Sensation," "Disappear," "Suicide Blonde," and "Never Tears Us Apart" -- adding minor hits like "Original Sin" and "Listen Like Thieves," but curiously bypassing the pivotal "Don't Change" and excellent "Bitter Tears," which was a bigger hit than several songs on the record. American Idiot is an unapologetic, unabashed rock opera, a form that Pete Townshend pioneered with Tommy, but Green Day doesn't use that for a blueprint as much as they use the Who's mini-opera "A Quick One, While He's Away," whose whirlwind succession of 90-second songs isn't only emulated on two song suites here, but provides the template for the larger 13-song cycle. Fifteen, named for the number of days it took the band to record it, is a bundle of energy and testosterone that harkens back to the stadium rock sounds of Guns N' Roses and Aerosmith. Fifteen is an aggressive blend of southern blues and classic rock, with charismatic vocals. Replacing a drummer (Xavier Muriel), guitarist (Stevie D.), and bassist (Jimmy Ashhurst) may sound like a completely different band. It is, but in a good way. So those already enamored of Nathanson should have no reason for complaint on his second major-label release -- and sixth overall -- Some Mad Hope. The same themes he's dealt with on his previous albums -- regret and desire, roughly -- are here, the same sentimental lyrics and sweet descriptions of past loves, presented in major keys and with clean production. It's typical stuff but it's done well, mixed so Nathanson's emotive voice comes through clearly. But for these same reasons, those unfamiliar with the musician's repertoire may be unimpressed by his overall ordinariness. I purchased this CD when i heard the song "Complicated". I truly enjoyed that song and was expecting a lot from Avril. I was not disappointed. Here is a song by song account of what this album has to offer. 1.Losing Grip- A guitar driven pop song. It is something unusual to find in a teen pop artist. Lots of Avril's lyrics can apply to many different situations, that is what I like about this song. I like that it's angry but not to the point of Alanis, there is still a sweetness, she's angry but she's over it and will survive. 2.Complicated- I'm not going to go into detail explaining this song, we've all heard it or you wouldn't be reading this review.
