The Family Medicine Residency Program at Halifax Medical Center is flexible and designed to fulfill each resident's individual needs and objectives. The program provides sequential and gradually increasing ambulatory care responsibility as well as realistic experiences required of family physicians. The family physician is primarily responsible for comprehensive ambulatory care. For this reason, our program increases the time allotted to ambulatory care and community medicine during the three year program. The first year is somewhat similar to a rotating internship with about 90 percent inpatient training and 10 percent ambulatory care. By the second year, time is divided equally between in hospital and ambulatory care services. The Marshall Family Practice Residency offers an excellent, balanced educational program which gives residents a wide range of clinical knowledge and the confidence to apply that knowledge throughout the residency and beyond. It is a broad-based program which is designed to offer the resident significant flexibility throughout the three year experience, particularly in the third year which includes five to six months of elective time. Residents begin early to develop their own patient base at the Family Practice Center, starting with 1/2 day per week in the first year and working up to three to four half-days per week in the third year. The Carolinas Medical Center-Union Family Practice Residency Program is a 2-2-2 program of the parent Carolinas Medical Center Family Practice Residency Program. Our program focuses on educating residents who would like to work in a small town, rural or suburban community. Year 1 occurs at Carolinas Medical Center, a major teaching hospital. There is a strong emphasis on acute and critical care and routine obstetrics. Years 2 and 3 are based at CMC-Union, a smaller community hospital located in Monroe, North Carolina. These two years emphasize the knowledge and skills necessary for small town or rural family practice, which includes more ambulatory experiences, obstetrics, community medicine, agri-medicine and public and mental health. Both programs received the maximum accreditation cycle -- five years -- until the next site visit! The Department of Family Medicine was founded with the purpose of providing residents and medical students with the cognitive and procedural skills necessary to provide excellent care for their patients. To meet these goals, the Saint Francis FM Residency has designed a curriculum which gives the resident a broad-based experience in a large community hospital combined with a strong real-world experience in family practice. We admit children and adults from our practice to the Medical Center at MUSC or Trident Medical Center. Inpatients are cared for by the family medicine services (an attending, clinical pharmacist, resident and interns). Clinical problems occurring within our practice are similar to those seen in a community setting. Recognizing the value of this ambulatory care exposure, residents have an increasing responsibility for patient care. They are scheduled for one, four and five half days in the Family Medicine Center as first, second and third year residents, respectively. The median number of patients seen per half day is four (first year), six (second year) and eight (third year). Supervision is always available from our family medicine faculty. Each faculty clinician maintains an active medical practice within the Family Medicine Center to promote continued growth as a physician and to serve as a role model. See less
