I've never been a rich person and mostly work too many hours. So I've had to learn to do things on a tight budget for both time and money. I have done a lot of do-it-yourself projects. I've been making and using pop bottle pots for years... They aren't in any way fancy, but they are cheap and fairly easy to make, and best of all, the plants love 'em! Believe it or not I even used them to line my front porch and planted Sweet 100 Cherry Tomatoes in them. By keeping the water reservoir filled with a very mild dilution of Miracle Grow and keeping the plants pruned I had a wall of cherry tomato plants just outside my front door, ready to pick snacks and the plants made a cool looking tall and slender 'hedge' giving me more privacy. A few days ago I posted about my cassette tape wallet and how it’s held up over the past 10 months, and I promised a tutorial. Well here it is! First you need to get your hands on a cassette tape. For my first wallet I already had those at my house, but for this one I ordered them from American Science and Surplus. These ones were screwed together, so it was super easy to take them apart. My first one was glued together, so I had to carefully pry the pieces apart with a flat head screw driver. If you have to separate your tape like this, be very careful. I cracked one in half because I was trying to rush it Some are glued up pretty good. Here are the pieces together. The zipper is 9 inches and I just placed the two pieces of the tape over the inside fabric to see how big it had to be. I have been playing with making my own shrinky dinks from recycled plastic packaging. #6 clear plastic works the best - I tried #1 and that just went all rubbery and milky. I'm not the first to come up with this technique so I'll list a few places I found that inspired me at the end of this post. On to to the tutorial! First, gather your materials. Scissors, #6 plastic container washed and stickers removed (I use rubbing alcohol to get the adhesive off) fine tip permanent marker, fine grit sand paper, colored pencils, and a heat gun or an embossing gun. Step 1: Cut out the tops and bottoms of the plastic containers to get nice flat pieces of plastic. I found that the sides warped alot, so I don't recommend using them. Step 2: Draw your design on the plastic with the permanent marker. I just traced a design from a clip art book. Remember that your design will shrink down to about 25% to 50% of it's original size. (I'm not sure how much smaller really - but basically it shrinks alot) So... See less

If you've chosen to use a mint tin or other ferromagnetic box, your life will be easy: Just drop your magnet(s) in the box, shut the lid, and stick it to the fridge. Otherwise, welcome to the trickiest part of the project: Opening your boxes without making it look like they've been opened. If you've got large boxes, like the cream cheese box shown here, start with those. Most cardboard boxes used for packaging are assembled with glue. Find a flap that's held down by glue. Using a sharp knife, carefully cut through the glue that holds one of the flaps down. Be sure to not bend the flaps as you open the box this way. | Remove the contents of the box, drop in a magnet, and glue it in place. A hot glue gun is great for this. Drizzle in a little hot glue, and drop the magnet in on top of the bead of hot glue. Quickly place the box on a horizontal ferromagnetic surface (like the top of the fridge) so that the magnet is pulled down, flat against the side of the box and is then held in place... See less

They are colorful, fun, nostalgic, and celebrate the red, white, and blue in all their graphic glory. I just love them! First off, you may wonder where I got these images? Well, straight from the net, baby! But, I didn't "steal" them, they are images in the public domain, meaning that anyone can use them for crafting, brochures, web sites, or whatever! There's lot of public domain images out there and a lot of great resources. I found this resource at Wikipedia. I actually acquired the images I am using for this project at the Online Library at Northwestern that I am using in this project. I was inspired by this amazing Japanese craft book (link). I made my stamps out of cork, because I have LOTS of them. It is a bit more rustic than using erasers, but it’s also recycling! Draw your design on one end of your cork using a Sharpie. I used a silver Sharpie for the dark stained corks. Using the tip of your craft knife, stab around your design. Insert the craft knife 1/8″ -1/4″ deep. Carefully cut around edges, being careful NOT to cut off your design. If you mess up, just slice it off and start over! Pull off excess cork from around your designs. Stamp away! My first stamp! Roll the stamp around a little to get full coverage. Stamping crazy! You can have a whole set in a matter of minutes! Try carving on the side of the cork for larger stamps and use a pencil eraser for small round shapes. BTW - I’ve found that synthetic cork works pretty well too. See less

You can make them whatever size you like, but I would suggest starting with a small pom pom so it doesn't take forever. * Cardboard * Compass, or two circular items you can trace around. * Wool * ScissorsMethod Step one in making pom poms is to create two donut shaped pieces of cardboard. Using your compass or larger of your two circular items, trace out two circles on your cardboard. I would suggest about 5cm (2 inches) diameter. Next put a smaller circle, say 2cm (a little under 1 inche) in the middle of your larger circles. Now cut out the two larger circles, then cut out the inner circles. You will now have two donut shaped rings, 5cm outside diameter with a 2cm diameter hole. Place the rings together. The idea now is to wind the wool around the rings. Cut the wool into manageable lengths, perhaps a couple of meters (about 6 feet) at a time. Hold one end on... See less
