My latest favourite thing to make, little boxy pouches. It took me almost an entire morning, lots of paper and sellotape and countless cups of tea to figure this out. I’m here to save you the bother. This little bag is 4.5 inches long, 3 inches high and 2 inches deep, just right for a lipstick and a compact (or better still, lots of sweets). 1. Choose your fabric. This is a great project for showing off a teensy piece of fabric. This is a Japanese fabric bought from nuno.plus - I’m guessing I’ll be able to squeeze three little boxy pouches from one fat quarter. Bargain!! 2. Cut two rectangles measureing 8 inches by 6 inches. The longer length is the top. Turn under a half inch on each piece and press, this is where you’ll be fitting the zip. 3. I like to use zips that are more than long enough, I find it easier to sew them in when the zip pull is well and truly out of the way. Please excuse me if I am sometimes at a lost for proper sewing terminology. My methods may not be the best, so you may, in the process, want to incorporate your own and/or change some things. These steps just work for me. I came up with this step-by-step tutorial upon the request of a fellow 'craftster'. I have divided it into several small parts. You will notice that I cut my materials as I go about sewing. I do not enjoy cutting, that is why I don't do it all at the beginning of a project. For this reason, dimensions for the fabric pieces are provided as you go along each part of the tutorial. I personally find that if I do one small part at a time and take breaks in between, I end up with good results. I suggest you do the same.... See less

A couple of people have asked me if I use a pattern for the little bags I sew. Not usually, but the bags are generally adaptations of one basic design. I thought I'd share that design in case anyone is interested. First, cut out the fabric! You can cut out either one piece where the fold would be the bottom of the bag or two pieces (you'd have to cut out two pieces if the pattern in the fabric goes in one direction; otherwise, the design would be upside down on one side of the bag). I use 1/4" seam allowances, so if you want the finished bag to be 5" wide and 7" tall, your one piece would need to be 5 1/2" wide and 14 1/2" long. The example is one piece, folded: You will want to cut a lining as well. It will be the same size as the exterior. Stitch the sides of the bag, right sides together and using a 1/4" seam. Also stitch the bottom if you cut two pieces instead of one. Next, you will sew in the corners of the bottom of the bag to create a flat bottom. Grab the bottom corner and... See less

Make sure that you clip half the width of the seam allowance on the top curved edge of both the side pieces. This is essential. You won't be able to put the zipper in otherwise. | Fold seam allowance over to the wrong side and press with your fingers. | Pinning will keep the seam allowance turned under. | Pin purse side to zipper. | It helps if you curve the zipper as you pin. | Do the same for the other purse side. The second side is more awkward to pin on. It may help if you hold the zipper and the seam allowance from underneath and pin from the top. Take your time to position the zipper properly and don't rush this part. The more time you take, the better your purse will look.
