Until now scientists have teleported similar objects such as light or single atoms over short distances from one spot to another in a split second. But Professor Eugene Polzik and his team at the Niels Bohr Institute at Copenhagen University in Denmark have made a breakthrough by using both light and matter. "It is one step further because for the first time it involves teleportation between light and matter, two different objects. One is the carrier of information and the other one is the storage medium," Polzik explained in an interview on Wednesday. The experiment involved for the first time a macroscopic atomic object containing thousands of billions of atoms. They also teleported the information a distance of half a meter but believe it can be extended further. These new features will allow users with a GPS device to have their present location marked on Wikimapia. This will allow those users to check out what places are near to their location. There are two ways you can add this functionality. Firstly would be to go to their blog post: GPS to WikiMapia (at this time for Windows only) and download the software there. Secondly would be to go to Wikimapia. Once there, open the “WikiMapia” menu and select “GPS + WikiMapia”. That will pull up this screen (image clickable for larger version). From that screen you will download and install the Wikimapia GPS software. Once you hit “Start GPS” on the software you will be ready to go. Perennial sea ice -- thick ice that is normally present year-round and is not affected by the Arctic summer -- had disappeared over an area bigger than the British Isles, ESA said. Torpark uses its own network of net routers to anonymise the traffic people generate when they browse the web. The browser can be put on a flash memory stick so users can turn any PC into an anonymous terminal. Hide and seek The Torpark tool has been created by Hacktivismo - an international coalition of hackers, human rights workers, lawyers and artists. Torpark uses the Tor network of internet routers set up by the Electronic Frontier Foundation that already has tens of thousands of regular users. The hybrid silicon-laser chip could transfer data between computer components much more quickly by using optical fibres rather than ordinary computer wires, its developers say. Although the chip is several years away from commercialisation, it could kick-start a revolution in computing and communications, by cutting hardware costs and even leading to completely new architectures, the researchers claim. The "electrically pumped hybrid laser" was created by sandwiching together indium phosphide, which generates light in response to a current, and silicon. The key step is a low-temperature bonding technique that does not damage the silicon circuitry involved.
