27 year old Niko Schabel was brought to our attention by Quantic. “Have a listen, you might like this,” he said handing over a CD-r to Ubiquity A+R rep Andrew Jervis after a gig in San Francisco. He was right. Schabel hails from Berlin and, thanks to Quantic, now records for Ubiquity as Radio Citizen. His sound ranges from slack dub, moody folksy-soul, to adrenalin infused and spiritual cinematic jazz. The sound of Radio Citizen comes from Schabels ability to loosely glue together a collage of sampled textures which are embellished with gifted musicians and often topped-off with the seductive vocals of the worldly Bajka. It sounds complicated, but the end result is actually very simple and addictive. Schabel is the main force behind Radio Citizen and in addition to the sampler and mixing desk he plays alto saxophone, clarinet and bass clarinet, kalimba and small percussion, plus rhodes, flute and synthesiser. Essentially, this is a raw and funky youth choir that mixed traditional gospel with downhome Soul (they opened up for Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsies concert, FYI). This CD will make you clap your hands, stomp your feet and say YEAH in a way that few CD's of recent times will do. The gutbucket rhythm section works well with traditional gospel tunes such as "No No No" and "Music in the Air." This is mixed with early 70s liberation anthems like the title cut and "Simple Song of Freedom." The VOEH (not to be confused with the Boys Choir of Harlem) also adds then funky gospel choir treatment to preiod tunes like "For What It's Worth" to great effect and the rendition of "Let It Be Me" is enough to bring tears to your eyes. But the pint-sized marvel Kevin Griffith really sets things on fire with his high powered lead on Ritchie Havens' "Shaker Life" (reminds one of Little Stevie Wonder leading a choir). Jazz reintroduced many musical instruments, previously used only to perform classical music and military marches, to bars and clubs. It also added an element of "fun" to the Japanese music scene. As a result "Ongaku Kissa" (音楽喫茶 - lit. music cafe) became a very popular venue for live jazz music. Under pressure from the Imperial Army during World War II the performance of jazz music was temporarily halted. After the war ended the United States soldiers - who were occupying Japan at the time - and the Far East Network introduced a number of new musical styles to the country. Boogie-woogie, Mambo, Blues, and Country music were performed by Japanese musicians for the American troops. Songs like Shizuko Kasagi's "Tokyo Boogie-Woogie" (1948), Eri Chiemi's "Tennessee Waltz" (1951), Misora Hibari's "Omatsuri Mambo", and Izumi Yukimura's "Omoide no Waltz" became popular. One of the engines that drives Japanese society and makes Japanese people the way they are is called hito no me (HEE-toh no meh), which translates as "the eyes of others." In all that you do in Japan, there is the sense that you're being watched by everyone around you, and that if you stray too far outside the invisible lines of what is acceptable, you'll be judged harshly by your neighbors. This tendency to be concerned with appearances is a big part of daily life here, and it's part of the reason why Japan can seem a very homogenous place when viewed from the outside. See less
