We've heard lots of guff about the kitchen of the future, but French designer Antoine Lebrun takes the concept to the next level with Aion. His fanciful concept for the Fagor Brandt group works the way the earth does; this "multifunctional appliance" for a small kitchen 10 years in the future uses plants in its range hood to filter water and air. When it's closed, it's in washing mode, using water filtered through those plants, along with an unspecified type of natural soap the plants produce. When the appliance is open, there's a cooktop on the left, and a sink/washing area on the right where you place all those dirty dishes. While the whole concept seems rather far-fetched, we like Aion's radical design, as well as the notion of plants in the kitchen, doing the work they've always done: cleaning and renewing the environment. With the ASUS Ecobook, the computer manufacturer is trying for a laptop that is as friendly to the environment as it looks — ASUS is shooting for the sum of the Ecobook's parts to be 50% recyclable. To reflect this environmentally-minded design philosophy, the Ecobook is covered with smooth strips of bamboo. ASUS is still in the process of benchmarking various components and didn't have a spec sheet for us, but we did find out that the plan at the moment is to use an Intel Core Duo 2 processor. The laptop's chassis is still undergoing revisions and the picture above does not reflect the final look of the Ecobook. Right now, the Ecobook looks a lot like the leather-covered ASUS S6, but we're told the final design may appear more like a Macbook. Claiming to be the world's first bamboo sink, this round basin takes the trend to the bathroom. To make it, craftsmen hand-turn each sink on a huge lathe and then rub it for a sateen sheen. The sink is then sealed in waterproof polyurethane that's said to be "maintenance free" and comes with a 10-year guarantee. Apparently the makers started with a salad bowl and quickly expanded their catalog. The sink's only drawback is the price: $500. It costs a lot green to be green. See less

Constantly trying to improve energy efficiency inside today's airtight houses makes the air stale, so homeowners are going to great lengths to freshen their indoor environments with high-tech heat exchangers and air purification systems. But French designer Mathieu Lehanneur and Harvard scientist David Edwards decided to take a more natural approach, using a mobile greenhouse they call Bel-Air to purify and oxygenate the air the same way it's been done for eons. The Bel-Air greenhouse takes an active approach to air purification, taking in stale air and forcing it through its three natural filters consisting of the plant's leaves and roots as well as a humid bath of water. Not only does it bring more oxygen and moisture into the room, it's also aesthetically pleasing at the same time. Prototypes are now for sale, and the device's creators will be showing it at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in February, hoping to market it by 2009. See less

For instant replenishment, there’s also a system akin to swapping out propane tanks for gas grills, using a network of 125 refueling stations where robotic mechanisms quickly replace easily-swapped batteries with freshly charged ones. Turn the window so the green pane is on the outside of the other two and it'll reflect heat, which means you won't have to kill your air conditioner trying to keep cool. Sound pretty ambitious? It is, but the architects led by Lord Norman Foster of the United Kingdom are doing everything they can to make the city's lofty goals a reality. Masdar's utilities, such as power, water sanitation, and cooling will all rely on a series of solar collectors and wind towers. No building in the city will be taller than five stories, nor will streets be wider than 10 feet in width (pretty narrow!), but planners are trying to alleviate congestion through the use of a three-tiered transportation design. Six to eight cars are said to be able to fit in one conventional parking space. The cars are built around an omni-directional robot wheel, which not only allows for impressive maneuverability, but also contains the vehicle's electric-drive motor. City-goers will be happy to hear that the system allows for each wheel to turn 90 degrees, making parallel parking as easy as driving sideways. The City Car is due to be shown off next year. A new washing machine uses just a single cup of water to clean an entire load of clothes, saving a ton of both water and energy every time its used. The secret? Little plastic chips that it uses to absorb the dirt from your clothes. The water is heated up enough to dissolve the dirt, then the chips absorb it. The chips are removed at the end of the wash and can be reused up to 100 times.
