About the San Francisco Garter Snake The San Francisco Garter Snake is protected by federal and state endangered species laws and is considered to be quite rare and beautiful. This colorful snake has an orange-red head, red and yellow stripes, and a blue-green belly. Garter snakes do not have a poisonous bite, but they do have a skunk-like habit of discharging scent glands when threatened.
