Best Skin AHAs & BHAs - Glycolic & Salicylic Acids AHAs = Glycolic Acid is from Natural fruit acids (Alpha Hydroxy Acids or AHAs) to rejuvenate the skin by encouraging the shedding of old, sun-damaged surface skin cells. Glycolic acid is the alpha hydroxy acid most frequently used for Glycolic Acid facial treatments but lactic and citric acid are also useful. Of course, lactic acid doesn't come from fruit - it comes from milk. AHA - glycolic acid preparations are recommended for those whose skin is showing signs of aging. Fine lines, brown marks and dry spots (solar keratoses) can improve with regular applications or peels. Glycolic acid may also prove helpful for those prone to acne. BHAs = Salicylic acid, also known as Beta Hydroxy acid, is more effective than many AHA preparations. Salicylic acid is an ingredient used in many over-the-counter acne medications. It is often found with pads as applicators (such as Stri-dex pads). It is also used to treat other skin disorders including dandruff, psoriasis, calluses, corns, warts, and more. Salicylic acid helps slow down shedding of the cells inside the follicles, preventing clogging. Salicylic acid also helps break down blackheads and whiteheads.

Directions: Dispense a quarter-sized amount into the palm of your hand and massage onto clean skin in gentle circular motions. May be used daily for all-over smoothing and exfoliation, or applied only to dry areas as often as needed. If using with an additional moisturizer, apply this treatment first and adjust amount used based on personal preference. For daytime use, wear under a Paula's Choice sunscreen. Do not apply to just-shaved legs (AHAs can sting if applied directly after shaving). May be used on the face, but avoid the eye area. Sun Alert: Using an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) product may increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun and the risk of sunburn. Daily use of a well-formulated sunscreen is required for maintaining the health of your skin. Skin Revealing Body Lotion Advice: Skin Revealing Body Lotion with 10% AHA can be used by all skin types, but works particularly well for normal to dry, sun-damaged skin. If blemishes, blackheads or small rough/raised bumps on the body are a concern, Paula’s Choice Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA is recommended instead (unlike AHA, BHA is able to penetrate the pore, normalizing its shape and improving its function). It is normal to feel a slight tingling when first using Skin Revealing Body Lotion with 10% AHA, but if this does not dissipate or if it worsens, discontinue use. Although AHAs can be irritating for some skin types, the irritation traditionally passes after repeated use. The ability for AHAs to exfoliate and solve many skin-care problems offsets the initial minor irritation involved with their use. AHAs have a drop-off rate, meaning they do not keep exfoliating past the dead surface layers of skin. Once AHAs have sloughed off the thickened surface layers of sun-damaged skin, their effectiveness tapers off. However, to maintain results, AHAs must be used on a regular basis. There is research showing that AHA usage can help stimulate collagen production in the dermis. It is best (and gentlest for the skin) to employ one form of exfoliation at a time. Therefore, while using Skin Revealing Body Lotion with 10% AHA, it is not necessary to exfoliate skin in a different manner. However, occasional and very gentle use of scrubs or loofah sponges is fine if desired. Keep in mind that too much exfoliation can create a host of new problems, the least of which will be red, inflamed, and irritated skin.

Concentrated pure glycolic acid (one of the most effective alpha hydroxy acids on the market) works diligently on your complexion, leaving skin visibly firmer, smoother, and more refined with a simple, once-a-day application of this treatment lotion. For added moisturizing benefits, pure vitamin E--long known to beautifully rehydrate skin--is also a key ingredient.

Directions: After cleansing your face and applying toner (if needed), squeeze a dime-sized amount of Paula's Choice 8% Alpha Hydroxy Acid Gel onto your fingertips and apply a thin layer over the entire face, avoiding direct contact with the eyes (but it can be used around the eyes). First-time users may notice a slight stinging sensation, which is normal. To avoid irritation, some first-time users should use the AHA solution once a day or once every other day (preferably at night) for the first few weeks. After prolonged use (4-6 weeks), you can apply the AHA more frequently, and eventually it can be used twice a day. However, for some people it may only be necessary to use the AHA once a day or once every other day. The frequency you should use Paula's Choice 8% Alpha Hydroxy Acid Gel completely depends on how your skin reacts so you may have to experiment with this product. If redness, dryness, or irritation occurs, cut back the frequency of application or discontinue use. Sun Alert: Using an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) product may increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun and the risk of sunburn. Daily use of a well-formulated sunscreen is required for maintaining the health of your skin. AHA Advice: If you are wondering which type of exfoliant is best for you, remember that a well formulated AHA works best on the surface of the skin and minimally penetrates the pore. That makes AHAs better for sun damaged skin and for exfoliating surface dryness. BHA is lipid soluble, which means it can penetrate into the pore making it better for breakouts, blackheads, whiteheads, and oily skin. There are many options for how to use these kind of products. Many people use it in combination with Paula's Choice 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion (using the BHA on blemish- or blackhead-prone areas and the AHA on sun-damaged skin; or use one at night and one during the day), while others prefer one exfoliant over the other. The one you should use depends on what you are trying to achieve. If dryness or irritation appears, do not give up, first decrease use to every other day or just once a day and you can have beautiful results. Some people wonder about using a scrub while using an AHA or BHA. Occasional use of baking soda mixed with your cleanser can be great for some skin types. Just be careful to gauge how your skin reacts before adding this step into your routine once or twice a week. Paula's Choice 8% Alpha Hydroxy Acid Gel can also be used on the elbows, feet, or knees. It is a multi-purpose exfoliant that works almost anywhere you have sun damaged or dry skin!

This is one of my staple skin care products. GOOD STUFF!

Directions: Dispense about a dime-sized amount into the palm of your hand or onto a cotton ball and smooth onto clean skin, avoiding direct contact with eyes. Depending on your skin type, follow with one of Paula’s Choice Blemish Fighting Solutions (if needed). During the day, follow with the appropriate Paula’s Choice sunscreen or your foundation with sunscreen. At night, apply the BHA product first, followed by a moisturizer (only over dry areas and around the eyes) and/or specialty product as needed. BHA Advice: To reduce skin flaking or possible irritation, some first-time users should use the BHA once a day or once every other day (preferably at night) for the first few weeks. After prolonged use (4-6 weeks), you can apply the BHA more frequently, and eventually it can be used twice a day. For some people it may only be necessary to use the BHA once a day or once every other day. The frequency of use for this BHA product completely depends on how your skin reacts so you may have to experiment until you find what works best for you. If redness, dryness, or irritation occurs, adjust frequency of application. There are many options for how to use this type of product. You may have to experiment to figure out your best routine. Some people use it in combination with Paula's Choice 8% Alpha Hydroxy Acid Gel (some use the BHA on blemish- or blackhead-prone areas and the AHA on sun-damaged skin; or some use one product at night and the other during the day), while others prefer one exfoliant over the other and do not combine the two. The one you should use depends on what you are trying to achieve and what works best for your skin. BHA is an essential step for battling blemishes or clogged pores. See the Skin-Care Routines section for a recommended selection of products for your skin type. If your skin gets worse or rashes appear, discontinue use and refer to my Battle Plan for Blemishes page for other product options. If you are using Paula's Choice Blemish Fighting Solution it is best to apply it after the AHA or BHA. And, as always, sunscreen is the last thing applied. If dryness or slight irritation appears, do not give up, first decrease use to every other day or just once a day and you can still experience beautiful results. Some people want to know if they can use a scrub while using an AHA or BHA. Occasional use of baking soda mixed with your cleanser or a soft washcloth can be great for some skin types. Just be careful to gauge how your skin reacts before adding this once or twice a week step into your routine. This product can also be used on the elbows, feet, or knees. It is a multi-purpose exfoliant that works almost anywhere! If you have Rosacea: We have received a lot of feedback from people with rosacea who are having a great deal of success with Paula's Choice BHA products. The reason for this may be due to BHA's relation to aspirin. Aspirin and BHA are both salicylates. Salicylates have anti-inflammatory properties. At the same time that BHA exfoliates the skin (removing the flaky skin problem associated with rosacea) it also calms down the redness!
