The startup was awarded a $100,000 U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) grant this week to prototype its Solar Road Panel–an energy-generating panel made from solar cells and glass that is meant to replace petroleum-based asphalt on roads and in parking lots.The panels, designed by Solar Roadways founder Scott Brusaw, contain embedded LED lights that might eventually act as a “smart” system, providing travel lines as well as timely warnings to drivers about roadblocks and wildlife up ahead. At the same time, embedded heating elements in the panels could prevent snow and ice from building up on the road. Once a prototype is complete, Solar Roadways still has a long ways to go before its technology is commercialized. The single couch swings easily into two separate spots for resting your weary head. That’s smart furniture. Bonbon’s materials are not quite as smart as their designs. Though ease of use and economy of space bode well for an efficient lifestyle, Bonbon might do well to adopt some more sustainable materials. Now, plant leaves are tackling global warming in another way — by serving as models for a technology that produces clean, renewable power. UC Berkeley researcher Michel Maharbiz, has worked with other scientists to develop an alternative energy system based on transpiration, a natural process where trees pull water from roots to tops, with liquid eventually evaporating off of the leaves. The system relies on artificial glass leaves to generate a steady stream of energy and is yet another example of biomimicry at work. Because of these alternate uses, the Sunbrella can be beneficial to multiple users. The 6 foot diameter solar panel that uses Photovoltaics can produce a peak output of 282 watts. (For example: a standard bathroom fan takes 18 watts of energy to run. A standard CD/cassette player takes 30 watts. An Engel 65 Refrigerator takes 43.2 watts to be powered). Along with a plug in for small appliances, it also comes with a built in fan for additional cooling on hotter days. The parts are all detachable for easy flat storage, and the spheral solar cells used for the panel are durable, light, and flexible. Problem is my green thumb is cursed. I can’t even keep a cactus alive. The O2 air purifier takes the pain out of the game. Place your potted plant on the O2 and water as usual. Excess water is evaporated and the system accelerates the process of photosynthesis, not to mention keeps tabs on our green friends so you’ll always know when they need water. See less

Designed to optimize the working process between multiple appliances, it provides solutions for storing, cleaning, caring and refreshing of clothes. After presorting the wash load on top of the washer, the machine’s interface suggests an adequate program. Then users simply choose additional settings they would like to use. The focus of the Laundry Wall concept is on the filtering of information: only information is given which is necessary at the particular moment in the working process. A tree that limits itself to only the air cleansing function. Oh yeh, it’s prepped up with some LED lights to create a warm ambience, and a seating ring at the base, to rest your tired feet. The over-all vibe is of a tree alrite, and here is how it works. The tree has an electronic fan (in the base) that sucks in ambient air and pumps it through the HEPA filters to remove all impurities. The refreshed air, then blows out from the top of the structure. I can see this as a helpful prop in malls where I can rest after a serious session of retail therapy. Maptor is this wonderful combination of a map and projector that (predictably) projects the desired map onto any surface. Palm of the hand, floor, and walls included. What I really fancy about it, is its size. Small enough to pass off as a lipstick (or a chapstick for you guys), the device is discreet enough for you to quickly hop into a quiet corner, check for directions and make your way forth. All this without anyone knowing that you are lost or need help! Another good thing about the Maptor is that it has GPS included; as a result there is this big red arrow on the map that points to your current location. Therefore getting your bearings and charting your course is easy. Although the images of the projected map look visible enough even in daylight, I wonder if it’s really going to be that clear in its practical avatar. Anyways, I think this project has the potential to make it to the market and be a hit, I would love to get one for my husband, who hates to ask for directions! See less

This clever idea involves a battery-operated LED, nestled within a cork that takes its place atop a bottle of the colorful beverage of your choice. Sure smoking will kill you, but this is one cool lighter that lights cigs without a flame. The heat is produced like a car cig lighter with resistance coils. When the top of the lighter is pushed down the USB connector for recharging the internal battery is revealed. Yanko also says there is some flash memory inside so you can charge your lighter and save files at the same time. I guess the design aims for a little retro style too since it has one of those spinning thingy’s that is used on normal lighters. If the thought of a lighter with flash storage inside gets you all excited, check out the Memlite. See less
