Working in a similar vain to Ben Thomas et al, Brooklyn born artist Lori Nix is also on a mission to make miniature landscapes with distressing details & then photographs the scene. Her photography and diorama consists of two collections: “Accidentally Kansas” and “Lost”. Pictured is the “ChickenTruck” from the series ‘Accidentally Kansas’, which explores Nix’s memories of growing up in the state combined with her love of 1970’s disaster movies. Her photographs are very dramatic, eerie and melancholic snapshots of enigmatic occurrences. It is only after lengthy viewing that we realize that there is more to them than just their subject matter, for Nix’s images seem almost too perfectly composed to appear real and contain an uncertain nature, much like the world in which we live in. Thus, her work reinforces the inherent paradox of the photographic image-truth and illusion battle. Think of your favorite teddy bear. Now imagine it’s been ripped open, gutted, and turned inside-out. That’s what Kent Rogowski’s Bears series has done to the iconic stuffed animals of our childhoods. In his recently published book and show at Foley Gallery, Rogowski mangles our memories and, at the same time, makes them all the more real. Kent Rogowski teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design where received his MFA in Photography in 2000. He has received numerous awards, including the Center Award from the Center of Photographic Art, and was selected as finalist for the Calumet/Friends of Photography Emerging Artist Award and the Nerve.com Emerging Artist Award. Rogowski also produced a feature length documentary film on drug trafficking and immigration called Al Otro Lado. A few of our gallery artists have been working on vellum paper and the translucent nature of the paper has intrigued our students. Here is a little project which I dreamed up to let them have a go at working with vellum. The students ages were ages 6-9 and it worked very well with them. I gave them each two pieces of vellum. One was for the background and one was for the foreground. First they used a pencil to draw the background and then put the second piece of paper ontop to make the foreground drawing. When they got the look they wanted, we used india ink and a brush for the background. On the second piece of paper they used oil pastel for the “up close parts” When the background was dry they used oil pastel on the parts they wanted to “stand out”. Once the drawing was done, we glued the background around the edges to a piece of foam core with a glue stick. The foreground paper was placed on top with the edges glued down to the background piece. The edges tend to roll with the glue... See less

One of its current incarnations is the popular cigar box purse. I first began making cigar box purses several years ago when I purchased a small lot of empty cigar boxes on ebay. There are many different types of cigar boxes and it can be fun, and sometimes frustrating, trying to find the type that is right for you. You might pay a little more for your boxes on ebay, but it can be easier than trying to find them locally, and you can choose just the type and quality you want. Locally, smoke shops will often sell you their empties for a small price, but you might find them scarce if you happen to be in competition with ebay sellers, crafters, and other artists. If you haven't heard about Moo Mini Cards yet, they're 28mm x 70mm (think: half a business card) photocards that have images on one side and brief calling card-like info or other text on the other. Originally designed as a kid's playful biz card, they've really taken off as Flickr photocards. For US$20, you can get 100 cards of your Flickr photostream, with all the images different, if you like. The cards have become very popular on Flickr, with people trading them, photographing them in odd situations, making them into composite images, etc. There's something very infectious, almost fetishistic, about the small size, the thick card stock, the glossy satin finish, that's turned them into something of a phenom. Having all those Mini Cards around has inspired some "Moosters" to make useful, fun things out of them. I use vintage images, quotes from 80's films and music and combine them to make a one of a kind decorative item for your home. Hang them from cabinet pulls, door knobs, lamps, etc. Don't let the name "ornament" fool you into thinking they are only for the holidays (although they would look great on your tree, too). Size, unless otherwise noted is 2"x2" and hang by scrap ribbons or fabrics. Libraries all over The Netherlands have suddenly found it essential to stock up on Daan Roosegaarde’s Variant shelves. Deftly hand-constructed out of recycled cardboard, the curious constructions were initially conceived at AKI art academy in Enschede where Roosegaarde studied sculpture. The Rotterdam-based designer soon found himself starting up a production line overnight after library bigwigs got whiff of his class project. Having also earned his stripes in architecture at the prestigious Berlage Institute in Rotterdam, Daan Roosegaarde is immensely interested in integrating functional sculpture into banal, everyday environments.
